Job objective:
The Research/Restoration Technician (RT) will be a full-time position with SECORE International based in Curaçao out of the Marine Research Station of the Caribbean Research and Management of Biodiversity (CARMABI) Foundation. The RT will work within the SECORE International team on a daily basis, reporting directly to SECORE’s Senior Scientist (SS). The RT will have a responsible role in executing and reporting on research and technology testing to further SECORE’s mission. During the coral spawning season, this involves intensive coral larval propagation activities that are inflexible in timing (i.e. night, weekend, and holidays required). Thus, working hours and days-off will be arranged around expected coral spawning times.
Duties to include:
- Under direct supervision of SECORE’s SS, RT will be co- responsible for the implementation of SECORE’s ecological and larval-based restoration research efforts in Curacao. This includes organizing and being responsible for gamete collections, setup and maintenance of Coral Rearing In-situ Basins (CRIBs), in- and ex-situ larval rearing, outplanting of recruits, and monitoring at outplanting sites.
- Take an active/responsible role with experiments, fieldwork, and technology development to further restoration efforts in Curacao. This includes data collection, curation/analysis, and reporting for experiments, technology testing, and/or general coral outplanting.
- Play an active role in training and outreach with both local and international stakeholders including SECORE’s implementation partners.
- Maintain communications with SS and other SECORE leadership, providing updates and reports as requested. This includes active contribution to SECORE’s broader external communications endeavors.
- Maintain a working knowledge of current technology, research and science relevant to the duties in the position. This may include publishing research results in peer-reviewed journals and/or presenting at relevant conferences and events in collaboration with other SECORE personnel and associates.
- Maintain safety standards at all times. For Scientific SCUBA diving, this includes maintaining certifications for medical fitness and safety trainings on a regular basis and abiding by the standards and practices of SECORE’s Scientific Diving Manual.
- Provide oversight and supervision to interns, volunteers, and potentially graduate students.
- Other duties and responsibilities as may be reasonably required by SS or other SECORE leadership from time to time, likely including participation in field expeditions in other locations.
Required Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree in a related field (e.g., marine ecology/biology, aquaculture, environmental sciences)
- Experienced Scientific SCUBA diver; including high and consistent situational awareness to ensure divers’ safety and work efficiency
- Experience in (in-situ) monitoring, data collection and analysis
- Passionate about SECORE’s mission to actively restore corals
- Self-motivated and able to work independently
- Ability to problem-solve, handle multiple assignments, and meet deadlines
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in at least the English language
- Proficiency in basic computer applications such as MS Office and Google Suite
- Valid passport and driver’s license
- Able to work in a variable work environment with changing working hours and time off
- Must be able to safely lift and carry at least 35 pounds
Preferred Qualifications
- M.S. degree with research experience demonstrated by peer-reviewed publication
- Field experience in coral spawning and larval rearing work
- Demonstrated proficiency in data handling and statistical analysis
- Fluent in Dutch and Papiamentu language
- Experience in supervising groups of divers (e.g., Divemaster)
- Nearshore small boat handling experience
- Experience in formal or informal education
- Prior field experience in Curaçao
- Citizenship in Curaçao, the Netherlands, or USA
