SECORE International, Inc. is a global nonprofit dedicated to the conservation and restoration of coral reefs through scalable, science-based solutions. SECORE partners with research institutions, governments, NGOs, and local communities to develop and implement innovative coral restoration techniques, building capacity and sharing knowledge to safeguard coral reef ecosystems around the world.
Position Overview
SECORE is seeking a mission-driven and experienced Director of Technology to lead the organization's technology department. This is a strategic, senior leadership position that will oversee the design, refinement, production, and implementation of technologies and methodologies used in coral restoration and enhancement. The Director of Technology is a creative thinker who will develop new breakthrough technologies in collaboration with the department team, external collaborators and SECORE’s senior leadership. The Director of Technology will lead a small interdisciplinary team and work closely with SECORE’s science, training, and field staff, as well as external partners, to ensure that technologies are fit for purpose and ready for field deployment.
This role is ideal for someone with a background in marine engineering, environmental technology, project management, and/or applied R&D who is motivated to create real-world solutions for coral reef recovery. It offers the opportunity to shape and scale the next generation of coral restoration technologies while working in a dynamic, international nonprofit setting.
Key Responsibilities
● Lead SECORE’s technology development program, including technology ideation, setting strategic goals, identifying priority R&D directions, and managing technology development timelines and budgets.
● Supervise and mentor a growing technology team, including engineers and technical support staff; foster a collaborative and innovative team culture.
● Coordinate the design, testing, and refinement of coral restoration/enhancement tools.
● Collaborate with SECORE’s science and field teams to align tool development with biological and ecological requirements and integrate feedback from field trials.
● Support translation and scaling of technologies, including development of documentation, assembly guidance, procurement strategies, and maintenance plans for implementation partners.
● Work closely with SECORE’s field teams and partners around the world to oversee technology deployment and testing in real-world conditions.
● Ensure systems are designed for replication, affordability, and usability by SECORE’s broad network of restoration partners operating in small island developing states and low-resource settings.
● Represent SECORE externally, including at conferences, partner meetings, and with collaborators involved in applied marine restoration engineering.
● Develop and manage manufacturer and industry relationships, including contract negotiations with new vendors.
● Promote innovation, cost-efficiency, and environmental sustainability in all aspects of SECORE’s technological work.
● Support and identify opportunities to increase funding for the organization’s technology development efforts.
Required Qualifications
● Bachelor’s degree or higher in mechanical engineering, marine engineering, applied environmental science, product design, project management, or a related technical field.
● Minimum 5 years of experience leading or contributing to hands-on technology development, engineering design, or applied R&D.
● Demonstrated ability to design, prototype, test, and troubleshoot tools or systems for real-world application—especially in field-based or resource-limited settings.
● Experience managing or supervising technical teams and contractors.
● Strong project management and organizational skills, with a track record of coordinating timelines, resources, and cross-functional input.
● Ability to work effectively in a remote environment with collaborators across multiple time zones and cultures.
● Excellent communication skills in English, including technical documentation and cross-disciplinary collaboration.
● Willingness and ability to travel regularly, including internationally.
Preferred Qualifications
● Experience in conservation, environmental restoration, marine technology, or a related applied science field.
● Familiarity with coral restoration, larval propagation, aquaculture, or ecological fieldwork.
● Experience working in small island developing states or similar international field settings.
● Knowledge of materials sourcing, fabrication workflows, and/or designapproaches in applied R&D.
● Experience in vendor management, negotiation, and contract management
● Spanish proficiency or prior experience working in bilingual or multicultural teams.
● Experienced SCUBA diver

Employment Details
● This is a full-time position, preferably based in the Dominican Republic, with flexibility for regular travel.
● The Director of Technology reports to the Senior Director of Technology and Implementation and will work closely with leadership across SECORE’s departments.
