Senior Marketing Specialist

Department: Marketing, Communications, and Experience

Reports to: Marketing Manager

Status: Full-time, hourly/non-exempt, benefited position

Hours of Work: Monday-Friday, standard work week with flexibility for evening and weekend events and other projects.

Position Overview:

The Senior Marketing Specialist contributes to the mission of the Seattle Aquarium by creating and executing digital marketing campaigns, focused on email marketing and organic social media, to drive revenue and engagement among current and potential guests, and to inspire conservation of our one ocean. This position reports to the Marketing Manager.

This role is the primary owner of the Aquarium’s email marketing system. Alongside creating and deploying email campaigns for marketing and other departments’ communication goals, this position trains and assists other staff utilizing the email platform, responding with assistance as necessary, and approving drafted emails for publishing.

This role manages all Seattle Aquarium social media accounts and maintains a unique strategy for each channel and its audience to drive results. They report social media metrics regularly—working to continually improve the Aquarium’s digital presence—and create analytic reports. Online, they are also responsible for responding to the community at large and surveying and protecting the Aquarium’s brand reputation, including working with staff to respond to relevant issues that arise online.

This collaborative role requires them to work closely with multiple departments. They are responsible for managing an internal content calendar that combines external messages, audiences, objectives, and channels to ensure digital communications flow in sync. They also collaborate while planning and deploying campaigns—with both internal staff and external peers—to promote Aquarium initiatives and partnerships online and to optimize their performance.

Essential Functions:

  • Email marketing management and strategy: Utilize Aquarium’s email marketing platform (MailChimp) to manage, build and deploy email campaigns for marketing and other departments’ communication goals. Understand audience segmentation, content, and timing to drive results. Edit email content to align with style guide and voice. Work closely with data operations for list segmentation to ensure correct audiences are reached.
  • Email platform maintenance: Primary owner of the Aquarium’s email marketing platform. Train and assist other staff to utilize the platform, provide technical assistance when necessary, and ensure email strategies are aligned. Stay abreast of current email regulations and best practices to minimize list decay and abuse and spam reports.
  • Social media management: Create and coordinate social media posts, stories and campaigns with copy, videos and/or images. Maintain social strategy for each channel and its unique audience to promote Aquarium initiatives, events and brand awareness. Run pages on multiple platforms (e.g., Meta platforms, TikTok, LinkedIn, etc., and any that may be added in the future) consistent with Aquarium strategy and brand personality.
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners: Collaborate with staff while planning and deploying campaigns to ensure digital communications flow in sync. This includes but is not limited to event promotional plans, marketing efforts, philanthropy events, and more. Coordinate with external contacts to support and promote Aquarium partnerships online. Manage relationships with influencers to expand digital reach.
  • Content calendar management: Manage internal content calendar including external messages, audiences, objectives and channels. Identify opportunities and strategies to repurpose content effectively from other channels.
  • Brand reputation and community management: Community management across all social channels by interacting with content and responding to messages. Monitor and protect brand reputation online and respond to relevant issues. When possible, leverage social media tools to create stronger connections to BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, disability and other marginalized communities in service to our S.A.L.I.SH. values of creating more inclusive communities in our work.
  • Report analytics: Report social media metrics on a regular basis, compare performance trends and analyze ways to continually increase engagement and impressions online. When necessary, complete reports for grant funding opportunities.
  • Project management: Utilize project management software to track incoming project requests. Coordinate, build and manage projects and task lists. Communicate with clients.

Other responsibilities

  • Assist in other marketing projects as required.
  • Keep abreast of best practices and new trends in digital technology and social media.

Required Skills, Abilities, and Other Requirements:

  • While a bachelor’s degree and a minimum three-years of experience are preferred, we will consider various combinations of relevant experience and education to meet minimum requirements.
  • Experience creating and managing email campaigns including copywriting, editing, and design.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging social media platforms including but not limited to Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, YouTube, and X (formerly Twitter), with experience and understanding of developing compelling content for specific platforms and placements (Posts/Reels/Stories/Shorts/etc.).
  • Experience using creative applications such as Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or other similar tools, with a basic understanding of graphic design and video editing for the purpose of creating social media content.
  • Understanding of email and social media analytics, able to create and share analytics reports.
  • Understanding of online community and reputation management.
  • Able to prioritize, multitask and collaborate across multiple departments.

Working Conditions:

  • When onsite, most of the work is performed in a typical office setting at a computer workstation for the duration of your shift in a semi-private work area with frequent interruptions.
  • Walking, standing and sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Some exposure to elements as employees work in a campus environment with multiple buildings and outdoor and semi-covered areas. Regularly moves throughout campus including into exhibit areas while creating content for social media posts. Some exhibit areas have rocky, slippery surfaces.
  • This position works a hybrid schedule with at least two to three onsite days each week, one being Thursday. This may change to adhere to Aquarium personnel policies over time.

Salary and benefits:

$33.25 - $35.25 / hour.
