Schmidt Ocean Institute (SOI) was founded by Eric and Wendy Schmidt in 2009 with a goal to advance the frontiers of ocean exploration and research through technological advancement, intelligent observation, and open sharing of information. This is achieved by making ship time and associated assets freely available to scientists globally. In exchange, SOI supports public sharing of acquired scientific observations, data, and other information about the ocean to stimulate the growth of data applications and user community and to amplify and enable further exploration, discovery, deeper understanding, and effective conservation and management of our environment.

Schmidt Ocean Institute’s (SOI) Artist-at-Sea Program Manager aspires to bring the Ocean to the arts community and oversee the Program’s operation. The Artist-at-Sea Program Manager will identify artists, be responsible for art residencies aboard research vessel Falkor (too), design, curate and implement gallery shows and exhibits, including installation, and seek new opportunities for the Artist-at-Sea Collection. The Program Manager will work in collaboration with the Schmidt Ocean Institute communications programs, and report to the Director of Communications.

Responsibilities:

At-Sea Residencies

- Identify and manage new artists for residencies.
- Manage Artist-at-Sea berths, including artist contract management, in coordination with SOI’s operations team.
- Coordinate artist related public outreach activities in coordination with SOI’s communication department.
- Preparing artists for at-sea residency.
- Remote supervision of artists while they are at sea.
- Coordinate and address queries relating to the collection, Artist-at-Sea program, artist alumni, and future participants.
- Monitor, track, and compile artist evaluation and associated metrics for reporting purposes.
- Manage Artist-at-Sea Program ship-based assets and supplies.

Collections Management

- Manage art acquisitions from Artist-at-Sea participants for SOI’s collection.
- Maintain art collection inventory.
- Oversee logistics of collection such as shipping, insurance, and storage in collaboration with SOI’s Logistics and Shipping department.
- Provide general care and maintenance for the permanent collection.
- Develop and manage art maintenance plan and budget in collaboration with the Director of Communications.
- Responsible for publication of the collection in catalogs, digital platforms, and other sites.

Exhibition Management

- Manage loan documents, exhibit venue agreements, and other contracts.
- Oversee exhibition design, installation, on-site preparation, and display for exhibition and gallery shows.
- Overseeing writing for exhibition text and catalogs.
- Curate public programing and new exhibition and gallery shows that introduce works in the Artist-at-Sea collection.
- Occasional international and national travel for exhibitions, events, and visits to the research vessel.

Program Development

- Create high impact opportunities for the artists and Artist-at-Sea Program.
- Provide expert advice to SOI leadership on programmatic enhancements.
- Develop and maintain good working relationships with artists, galleries, art fair/show coordinators, and other collaborators.
- Liaise with artists and press to gain attention to programmatic activities and attract new artists to the program.
- Outreach to communities and audiences interested in ocean science and the Artist-at-Sea Program.
- Assist in the development of programmatic materials including but not limited to guides, booklets, reports, fact sheets, posters, and other assets in collaboration with SOI’s communication department.
- Manage and seek opportunities for art recognition and awards.
- Network with other museum and art gallery professionals.

Other Duties

- Understand and ensure current knowledge of the Institute’s new projects and Vessel cruise plans.
- Occasionally work a flexible schedule to support the Institute’s operations in other time zones, when required.
- Occasionally work in other locations to support the Institute’s operations when required.
- Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications and Skills

- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in an arts-related field,  and/or equivalent experience.
- Proven experience/knowledge of best practices in the areas of collection and/or artist management, collection stewardship, art handling, shipping and installation, and public programming experience.
- At least five years curatorial, management, or archival experience in the arts or other related role.
- Proven relationships/experience working with art galleries, art festivals, or others in the arts sector.
- Experience developing program announcements, including press releases and other public relations materials.
- Impeccable written and verbal communication skills.
- Deep commitment to excellence, including meeting deadlines and completing tasks with a high degree of accuracy, dependability and attention to detail.
- Ability to take initiative and work independently.
- Interest in ocean sciences and the arts.
- Passion/interest for philanthropic initiatives.
- Proficient in Google suite of office software, including Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Calendar, etc.
- Self-starter, highly motivated, with the ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively.
- Good interpersonal skills, including the ability to maintain a positive collaborative relationship with internal staff and external partners.
- Physical requirements: lifting occasionally over 20 lbs., standing, walking, climbing and balancing, use of hands to handle objects.
- Occasional national and international travel, valid documentation will be required

$100,000 - $130,000 a year.
