Save The Bay Hamilton Family Aquarium, Newport RI

Aquarium Curator

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Save The Bay’s Hamilton Family Aquarium is a new state of the art facility that is a fast paced, dynamic marine science center and aquarium that hosts large volumes of students and members of the public. We are seeking individuals available in a part time capacity whose role will be to support aquarium maintenance, life support system maintenance and animal care. This position will assist the aquarist staff with vertebrate and invertebrate husbandry and other aquarist duties. This position requires a person who is a passionate aquarist and dedicated to the conservation of Narragansett Bay and the environment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Preferred BA or BS in marine science, biology, environmental studies or related field
Experience as an aquarist, preferably for New England species but not required
Must enjoy working with the general public, children, and students
Must be comfortable working in wet, dirty, indoor and outdoor environments
Ability to manage time, organize, prioritize and efficiently complete varied tasks
Flexible and creative team member
Available to work a varied schedule including weekends and holidays
Annual criminal background check required

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Works 14-16 hours per week year-round. Friday and Monday, two days per week.
Maintenance and general care of aquarium equipment, exhibits and specimens
Assume responsibility for our live collection
Maintain and handle equipment with care
Occasionally educational interpretation of our animals and exhibits.
Mentor and help train aquarist volunteers and interns

SALARY & BENEFITS:

This is an hourly position that pays $16/hour.
