Position Description:

Save The Bay seeks one full-time (1,700-hour) AmeriCorps Member to join our Volunteer Management and Community Engagement team. This position will run from September 16, 2024, to August 31, 2025.

Save The Bay’s volunteer program operates year-round and engages people of all ages and abilities in the cause of protecting and improving Narragansett Bay. Volunteers support the organization’s work through hands-on, mission-based opportunities in areas throughout the watershed. Annually, we engage over 4,000 individuals in volunteer opportunities. As an AmeriCorps Member with Save The Bay, you will help inspire more people in the cause of environmental stewardship and conservation and increase community engagement and stewardship of Narragansett Bay and the watershed.

Save The Bay seeks a detail-oriented and engaging individual to drive connections between community groups, volunteers, and our mission. The Volunteer Engagement Coordinator will work with staff across program areas to engage new community groups, neighborhoods, and partners to build organizational capacity – particularly within Rhode Island’s EPA-designated Environmental Justice Communities. The Member will work alongside staff to develop new volunteer initiatives, develop and implement engagement and outreach strategies, identify new community partners, conduct/support volunteer recruitment and training, oversee volunteer and outreach events, and provide administrative support for the volunteer program. The Member’s service will help Save The Bay engage new audiences and communities in our work to increase awareness of Its mission and help individuals understand that the Bay belongs to them, as does the responsibility to protect it.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify new community groups and partners throughout the watershed, focusing on EPA-designated Environmental Justice Communities. The goal is to engage 3-5 new groups long-term.
  • Support expanded organizational engagement in Newport County by recruiting and training new volunteers and groups, expanding volunteer opportunities, and supporting existing volunteer initiatives.
  • Follow up and engage with potential volunteers and volunteer groups on an ongoing basis to build and maintain our volunteer base and expand organizational capacity. Track progress in building or maintaining partnerships.
  • Support existing volunteer efforts and programs, including the shoreline cleanup program, storm drain marking program, Aquarium volunteers, habitat restoration projects, and other initiatives.
  • Work alongside staff to assess existing volunteer efforts and programs and identify new opportunities to engage volunteers.
  • Plan and support training, supervision (as necessary), engagement, and retention of volunteers.
  • Support outreach and engagement events and efforts throughout the watershed with the organization’s Community Organizer and Marketing staff.
  • Ensure volunteers are continually interested and actively engaged in their work and with Save The Bay.

Qualifications:

Americorps Qualifications:

    • Be at least 18 years of age at the start of service
    • Must have a high school diploma or its equivalent
    • Must be a US citizen or lawful permanent resident/alien of the US
    • Satisfy the National Service Criminal History Check

Position Qualifications:

  • Bilingual candidates and those from EPA Environmental Justice Communities will be given preference.
  • Highly organized, proactive, and able to work independently to accomplish goals.
  • Must enjoy working with people of all ages.
  • Knowledge and/or interest in the marine environment and conservation issues and a passion for the mission of Save The Bay.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and efficiently complete varied tasks.
  • Must be a flexible and creative team member.
  • Ability to handle the role’s physical demands, including standing, sitting, lifting, and working indoors and outdoors.
  • Available to work a varied schedule, including some evenings and weekends.
  • Car recommended.

Salary and Benefits:

This is a one-year assignment of 1,700 hours from September 16, 2024- August 31, 2025, with a living allowance of $30,000. Full-time members are eligible for child

care allowance, student loan forbearance, and health care coverage during service time. Upon successful completion of 1,700 hours by August 31, 2025, members will receive a Segal education award of $6,895. The Member will also receive opportunities for professional development and training. Save The Bay has been selected as an AmeriCorps Rhode Island grantee for 2024-2027.
