POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Save The Bay’s Hamilton Family Aquarium is launching an Aquarist Fellow program, developed to provide on-the-job training in aquaria sciences and environmental conservation and education while providing assistance in the Aquarium’s daily operations. This fellowship offers the opportunity for participants to build a foundation for a career in aquaria sciences, marine biology, and/or environmental education by participating in all aspects of running a hands-on aquarium and educating the public about the ecology of Narragansett Bay. We have two, grant-funded, full-time (35-40 hrs./week) 12-month positions available from January 2, 2025 – December 31, 2025. Fellow positions will be based out of Save The Bay’s Hamilton Family Aquarium in Newport, RI.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Work 35-40 hours per week, including weekends
  • Successfully completed capstone project with guidance from Save The Bay staff
  • Undergo a criminal background check
  • Creative, reliable, and flexible team member
  • Ability to work individually as well as part of a team
  • Able to lift boxes of salt, heavy nets, and buckets of water

WHO SHOULD APPLY:

  • Those with a strong interest in learning about or have background experience in marine biology, aquaria science, and/or environmental education.
  • Those looking to gain knowledge, skills, and confidence in all aspects of aquarium animal care needs including the functioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting of a closed life support system, the ethical treatment of specimens within our care, techniques to capture and release specimens into the wild, and how thoughtful management of specimens can enhance animal welfare.
  • Those interested in communicating their knowledge and love for the animals in our collection to guests at the Aquarium.

SALARY & BENEFITS:

This is a 12-month position (January 2, 2025 – December 31, 2025) funded through the Institute for Museum and Library Services Museums for America grant program (MA-252839-OMS-23). Funding for each Aquarium Fellow is capped at $30,000.
