Research Assistant – SCCF Marine Laboratory

The Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and stewarding Southwest Florida’s coastal ecosystems. The SCCF Marine Laboratory, a member of the Southern Association of Marine Laboratories (SAML), is a collaborative team of six resident scientists and staff.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in marine science, estuarine science, environmental science, or a closely related field (required)
  • SCUBA certification (open water) with sufficient experience to conduct shallow technical diving tasks (typically <15 ft), including work in low-visibility conditions using hand tools
    • Note: Diving is a limited component of this position
  • Ability to work at heights (up to 20 ft above water) to service meteorological sensors (preferred)
  • Relevant coursework in marine biology, water quality, electrical engineering, or environmental engineering (highly desirable)
  • Experience with water quality sensor maintenance and calibration (e.g., YSI, Sea-Bird) (preferred)
  • Experience with both field and laboratory work (required); basic chemistry knowledge (preferred)
  • Demonstrated commitment to laboratory safety protocols and best practices
  • Ability to work effectively in hot, humid, and physically demanding field conditions
  • Experience operating and trailering small boats (<25 ft) (preferred); must be able to safely tow a boat trailer on local roads and highways within three months of hire
  • Must be organized and pay attention to details
  • Valid driver’s license (required)

Position Overview

The Research Assistant will support ongoing research, monitoring, and restoration efforts focused on water quality and marine and estuarine habitats.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain continuous in situ water quality sensors, including wet-chemistry nutrient sensors (training provided)
  • Clean and service sensors, including removal of marine fouling and application of antifouling coatings for long-term deployments
  • Perform routine field and laboratory calibrations
  • Assist with data entry, analysis, visualization, and presentation of results at local conferences
  • Maintain detailed laboratory and field notebooks documenting sample collection, processing, and daily activities
  • Support general field operations, including handling and transporting dive and sampling equipment

This role requires the ability to lift and handle SCUBA and sampling gear, as well as strong swimming and snorkeling skills.

SCCF is a drug-free workplace. The selected candidate must complete a background check and drug screening within two weeks of the start date.
