The San Francisco Estuary Institute (SFEI) is seeking an early-career scientist or engineer interested in environmental field studies with excellent organizational skills to join our interdisciplinary team investigating water quality issues in San Francisco Bay. This work will be carried out in support of the Regional Monitoring Program for Water Quality in San Francisco Bay (RMP) and other Clean Water Program efforts. SFEI’s Clean Water Program is one of the nation’s premier water quality science programs. It anticipates and meets the water quality data needs of policy-makers, resource managers, and the public. It helps the public, regulators, and those who discharge into our waters create more effective policies to ensure the health of our waters. Now in its third decade, the RMP is increasing its work on characterizing emerging contaminants in stormwater and developing an integrated monitoring and modeling approach for both legacy and emerging contaminants to address RMP management questions more efficiently.

This is a part-time, one year position (with the possibility for extension) for a candidate who will support diverse monitoring and research activities undertaken by the RMP and other Clean Water projects. We are looking for someone who can start immediately. The candidate should have a Bachelor’s degree in a pertinent scientific field and experience with fieldwork. They must be able to: (1) coordinate, prepare for, and participate in fieldwork, including stormwater and other types of monitoring; (2) collect, review, and synthesize scientific data and information from various sources; and (3) work well in teams as well as independently with general direction from senior scientific staff.

Primary position responsibilities will include:

  • Participate in fieldwork, including stormwater and other types of monitoring; can be rigorous/demanding during wet conditions and any time of day or night (weekends also), and requires someone with some flexibility in their schedule

  • Occasionally lifting or carrying heavy field equipment or supplies for short durations

  • Stormwater monitoring coordination; preparing supplies and field kits, field sampling, post sampling processing, shipping samples, coordinating with data services on field data

  • Other monitoring coordination: coordinating with analytical labs, preparing supplies, scheduling field days with external sampling partners, sampling, processing samples, shipping samples, and following up with labs

  • Assisting with developing contracts, coordinating with analytical labs, and updating websites

  • Develop maps and schematics for presentations and reports

  • Develop slides for presentations

  • Assisting with analyzing and synthesizing data

  • Assisting with operations tasks for the stormwater program (e.g. task management, and coordination with external collaborators)

  • This position requires in-office and/or in-person presence approximately 4 days per week for lab and fieldwork. Fieldwork may include multiple long field days per month in varying weather conditions

If you are excited about this role, but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this, or one of our other roles.
