SFEI is seeking a highly motivated Assistant IT Support Technician professional to join our IT team. This hybrid (in-person and remote) role plays a vital part in ensuring the smooth operation of our computer systems and providing top-notch support to our employees. (Please note that a weekly in-office presence is required for this position.)

As an innovative environmental science organization with its own data center, technical team and scientific staff, SFEI demands commensurate levels of innovation, commitment, and creativity from its IT support team. The ideal candidate must be a self-starter, able to work independently, and also serve as a reliable team mate. A selected candidate would join two other team members, while wearing two related “hats”:

System Administration: Responsibilities include troubleshooting hardware and software issues on servers, managing user accounts, performing system backups, and monitoring system performance to ensure network stability and security.

Desktop Support: Responsibilities include acting as the frontline IT contact for employees, resolving hardware and software problems on desktops, laptops, and peripherals. Additionally, they will install and configure new software, answer user questions, and provide technical guidance.

The ideal candidate must possess a strong technical aptitude for both Windows desktop and Linux server environments, along with excellent problem-solving and communication skills.

Qualifications

Education:

University or college degree or equivalent work experience.

Required Experience:

  • Must have a minimum of four years experience supporting a mid-size organization in its desktop and/or server environments.

  • Must demonstrate good troubleshooting best professional judgment in resolving technical issues.

  • Must have experience following best practices in supporting capable staff members.

Required Skills:

  • Technical: Strong knowledge of Windows, Linux, hardware troubleshooting, basic networking, and software installation.

  • Problem-Solving: Excellent analytical skills to diagnose and resolve technical issues.

  • Communication: Clear and effective communication with both technical and non-technical users.

  • Organization: Ability to manage tasks efficiently and prioritize workload.

System Administration:

  • Assist senior admins with server maintenance tasks.

  • Monitor system performance and troubleshoot basic system issues.

  • Learn and implement system administration best practices.

  • Perform user account creation and management tasks.

  • Conduct regular security audits.

Desktop Support:

  • First-line support: Address user issues via email and ticketing system.

  • Troubleshooting: Resolve hardware, software, and network problems.

  • User assistance: Answer questions, offer guidance, and train users.

  • Installation/Configuration: Set up new equipment and software.

  • Maintenance: Perform checks, run scans, and apply updates.

  • Ticket management: Log, track, document, and escalate issues.

  • Onboarding support: Assist new users with setup.

  • Knowledge management: Maintain FAQ and solutions database.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Conduct inventory management

  • Facilitate vendor communication

  • Perform basic user accounts administration

  • Learn and adapt to new technologies and systems.

  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment.

Salary & Benefits highlights:

  • Salary range: $82,000-$98,490 per year depending on qualifications and experience (Technical Analyst II to Associate Technical Specialist II). (Bay Area salary ranges are listed; note that salary ranges for other locations are 10-15% lower depending on location and are based on locational salary data). Salary ranges take into account many factors for making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, education, internal equity, and organizational needs. We expect to offer starting salaries at or near the bottom of the range.

About the Environmental Informatics Program

The Environmental Informatics Program utilizes the latest technology and design concepts to deliver scientific information to a wide range of stakeholders in dynamic, expressive, and cogent ways. The Data Services (DS) team specializes in managing data associated with a variety of environmental sample types and standardizing results using consistent data vocabulary and business rules. Over 4 million environmental data records are maintained by the DS team. Furthermore, the Clean Water Program is one of the nation’s premier water quality science programs. It anticipates and meets the water quality data needs of policy-makers, resource managers, and the public. It helps the public, regulators, and those who discharge into our waters create more effective policies to ensure the health of our waters.
