The San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory (SFBBO) is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting sustainability in the Bay Area and beyond by engaging communities in avian science, habitat restoration, and education. SFBBO’s education program aims to teach the public about important aspects of bird observation, ecology, and conservation, with an emphasis on underserved communities in the South San Francisco Bay. The Education Program Coordinator may also assist with bird and vegetation surveys, habitat restoration activities, and volunteer events; reports to the Habitats Science Director. This is a hybrid position with remote flexibility and mandatory in-person attendance for educational events and training sessions. Education Program Coordinator Responsibilities: Coordinate and develop SFBBO’s existing education programs including the Tidal Marsh Field Trip program at Alviso Marina County Park (coordinate with schools and teachers; develop and present orientation materials; lead field trip activities); assist Landbird staff with bird banding tours at the Coyote Creek Field Station (no banding experience necessary); lead bird and/or natural history walks; work with science directors to incorporate education programs into science projects; organize educational workshops; develop educational materials (flyers, brochures, guides); provide training and materials for other staff participating in education programs. Other Responsibilities: Assist with management of South Bay Tern Watch volunteer program; assist with volunteer management for the Colonial Waterbird program; assist with habitat restoration volunteer events and activities such as vegetation control, surveys, and planting. Required Background, Skills and Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in biology, conservation, ecology, environmental education, or related field; self-motivated team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to adapt to shifting priorities; highly dependable, organized, and detail-oriented; comfortable speaking to large groups; competent with Google Workspaces and Microsoft Office. Desired Skills and Qualifications: Fluency in Spanish; grant writing experience. Schedule and Physical Requirements: 24 hours/week; ability to traverse uneven/rough/inclined terrain and exposure to outdoor elements; part-time weekend work (up to 8 hours one weekend day per week, not to exceed 40 hours/week); ability to safely drive on dirt levees to remote field locations (SFBBO vehicle or mileage reimbursement provided); ability to move/transfer up to 40 lbs. Compensation and Benefits: $24.44/hour starting wage (paid twice a month); $40 per pay period phone and Internet stipend in pay periods worked.
