Principle Power acts as a trusted partner to developers, independent power producers, utilities, and EPCs, supporting its customers throughout the entire lifecycle of their projects. With 105 MW of cumulative capacity in operation or under advanced development and a multi-GW commercial pipeline globally, Principle Power is the market leader in floating offshore wind technology.

General Description

Principle Power Inc. (PPI) is looking to fill a full-time position for a Senior R&D Engineer with a Structural Engineering focus in one of our offices located in Lisbon, Portugal or Aix-en-Provence, France. The open position is set to be in the Technology Group of the company; a senior, small, dynamic, and diverse environment with the primary goal to qualify and mature innovative designs for the future of the WindFloat product line. This position will be a senior technical member of the organization focused on developing the next generation of WindFloat Products in line with our Company Technology Roadmap.

This person must have extensive experience designing floating offshore structures and their direct work will lead to step-changing innovations in design, performance, and ultimately the cost of the WindFloat® product line in future projects for next generation wind turbines.

Main Accountabilities

  • New product designs and concept investigations for semi-submersible platforms hosting next generation wind turbines. This includes idea generation, work planning, numerical modeling, and structural design and analysis of offshore structures.
  • Design and Analysis tasks for new concepts including preliminary sizing of steel structures, strength, buckling of stiffened panels and beams, and fatigue analysis (time domain and wave-induced spectral fatigue methods)
  • Ability to interface with fabricators and shipyards on designs. Fabrication yard experience is a plus.
  • Scoping of structural scopes of work, including R&D scopes, with the ability to both perform technical analysis and manage work independently
  • Support the development of tools and workflows to optimize early-stage design methods used to assess floating structural systems
  • Preparing technical reports based on structural analysis
  • Approval-in-Principle (AIP) and patent development
  • Prepare specifications and structural design criteria for further design maturation, including the development initial or conceptual structural designs and layouts
  • Interface with drafters to produce packages of drawings for certification
  • Represent Company for New Concept and Product Development related matters (internal and external)

  • Experience in concept-selection and pre-FEED stages of major projects, specifically in offshore semi-submersible structures
  • Experience in early-stage idea generation – seeking AIP for new designs and patents for new inventions
  • Experience in using commercial FEA software such as ANSYS or equivalent. Experience with floating wind turbine simulation software (e.g. OrcaFlex, OpenFAST, Bladed, etc.) is a plus.
  • Firm and practical knowledge of class standards and relevant regulations (ABS, BV, DNV, and/or API)
  • Experience in one (1) or more programming languages (Matlab, Python, VBA) with the ability to code simulation wrappers and post-processing tools
  • Experience in interfacing with drafting and modeling tools (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Rhino)
  • Strong technical and big data analysis skills with the ability to analyze, sort, and ingest operational data into simulation engines
  • Experience with Structural Health Monitoring topics and Digital Twin development/simulation a plus
