This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (.49FTE), 10-month, Food Service Worker 1 position for University Housing and Dining Services at Oregon State University (OSU).


The purpose of this position is to provide customer service support to various micro-restaurants, which may include cashier duties, serving and stocking, as well as consistent support to the cleaning of the dining room and washing of dishes. This position requires good communication skills and knowledge of food service safety and sanitation procedures.

UHDS houses over 4,800 students and offers a variety of living and dining options in 15 residence halls, a limited number of family apartments, three dining centers, 10-14 retail and coffee shop locations across campus, and a market. UHDS is an auxiliary enterprise which is funded solely by customers who use our services — we receive no State or General fund allocation.

Key Responsibilities
70% Serve customers in a retail food service operation
  • Provide friendly, polite, and efficient customer service
  • Serve food and beverages to customers
  • Adhere to food safety and sanitation guidelines
  • Maintain adequate supplies of dishes, cups, flatware, and napkins on the serving line
  • Set up and refill beverage stations and condiments
  • Set up food and baked goods on food lines and restock as needed
  • Assist with special meal functions (e.g. setting up tables and decorations, decorating tables, assembling snacks and treats)
  • Clean and sanitize food preparation area
  • Cashier as needed
20% Dish Room
  • Sort dirty dishes and load into appropriate rack, after scraping large food scraps into correct bin
  • Sort recycling from trash
  • Run dirty dishes through the dish machine
  • Pull clean dishes from the dish machine, and put away as directed
  • Wash pots and pans in three-compartment sink
  • Empty trash cans and replace liners when needed, and put trash/recycling in correct containers outside
  • Sweep and mop kitchen floors and back hallway
5% Dining Room
  • Clean and sanitize tables and countertops
  • Clear dishes and trash from dining room
  • Push in chairs and reset dining center furniture
  • Sweep and vacuum as needed
  • Clean door, window and door handles (interior and exterior), and sanitize when directed
  • Empty trash cans and replace liners when needed, and put trash/recycling in correct containers outside
5% Miscellaneous
  • Work cooperatively with other classified staff and student workers to complete daily tasks.
  • Use a computer to check work schedule, complete timesheet, fill out online forms and check employer-provided email

What You Will Need
  • Good customer service skills, with both internal and external customers.
  • Requires a valid Food Handler’s certificate within 30 days of employment. Must maintain certification throughout service with UHDS.
  • Demonstrable ability to work with diverse groups of individuals. Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Working Conditions
  • This a physically active job in an institutional kitchen environment. Incumbent will experience long periods of standing on a hard floor; working with commercial kitchen equipment; fluctuation in work flow, temperature, noise level.
  • Must be able to work shift on your feet and perform frequent arm movements
  • The employee in this position will often be required to lift/carry/push/pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Will require direct and/or indirect contact with raw meat, as well as most common food allergens, including gluten
  • OSU is a 100% tobacco-free campus
Work Schedule
  • Position will require availability for 3.5-to-4 hour shifts on a regular schedule. Some schedules are Monday-Friday, between 10:00am and 3:00pm. Other schedules may include nights and/or weekends and/or holidays.
  • UHDS dining operations run seven days per week, so weekend and holiday work may be required. OSU requires the ability to work a flexible schedule based on the needs of the business.
  • Must be flexible and willing to work in any area of the dining center as directed
  • This position is deemed essential; and the incumbent is expected to report to work during inclement weather, emergency, and other University work curtailments or closures
  • Good attendance is crucial for stability and day-to-day business needs. Must follow schedule and be on time and in uniform when shift begins.
