Position Summary | We are seeking a student to assist Oregon Clean Plant Center (OCPC) with plant production including tissue culture, and plant maintenance. The plant production area is located in the USDA-ARS, Corvallis, OR facilities. The student technical assistant will primarily perform duties such as washing labware, autoclaving materials, taking inventories, plant tissue preparation for in vitro propagation, and general lab duties, plant maintenance in greenhouses and screenhouse. The student will communicate completion of tasks and results to the immediate supervisor. The student must be detail oriented and capable of following step-by-step instructions accurately. We are seeking a team player who is comfortable working independently and, in a group, and able to ask for help when needed. The student must be available to work during spring break and summer. The student must be willing to follow Standard Operation Protocol (SOPs) for APHIS regulated locations. The student must be eligible for authorization to work in a federal facility. Oregon Clean Plant Center is a member of National Clean Plant Network, working with elite clonal berry germplasm including blackberry, blueberry, raspberry and strawberry. OCPC is a program at the OSU Plant Clinic and the USDA/ARS. |

Position Duties | Lab work- Tissue Culture (60%) General lab work: includes washing glassware, cleaning and organizing workspace, preparation of tissue culture media and stock solutions, sterilize equipment, aseptic work in a laminar flow hood and biocontainment hood, maintaining in vitro plant cultures, record keeping, data entry, explant initiations, and tissue preparation for micropropagation, communicate tasks completion to the immediate supervisor. Greenhouse work support (40%) Plant care (watering, fertilizing, weeding, pruning, flower removal, scout for pest and beneficial insect release), potting media preparation, pot washing, transplanting, autoclaving plant tissues as needed, graft indexing Fragaria and Rubus, record keeping. |

Additional Required Qualifications | You must be a student and have an interest in plant sciences, care about plants, have an excellent work ethic, and be willing to work under various environmental conditions (lab, greenhouse, and field). A willingness to learn new techniques/concepts and the ability to work with a scientific team. Good communication skills are required. The student must be able to reply to email messages to/from the supervisor and report task completion status. Coursework in and related fields is desirable – including, but not limited to: Tissue Culture, Plant Production, Biology, Botany, Chemistry, Horticulture, Microbiology, Biochemistry and Biotechnology. |
Preferred (Special) Qualifications | Experience with plant tissue culture, plant propagation and plant maintenance is preferred, although we are willing to train the right student. This is a great opportunity for motivated and curious students looking to get hands on training with techniques in tissue culture, plant propagation and maintenance, to learn from working researchers, and to solidify knowledge learned through coursework.
