Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill two part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week during the term and up to 40 hours per week when not enrolled) Student Technical Assistant position(s) for the Department of Horticulture at Oregon State University (OSU). Performs light to heavy tasks such as lab and greenhouse experiments, controlled pollinations, plant care, grounds maintenance, field assistance, maintenance support, cleaning, and other duties to assist with the mission of the ornamental plant breeding program. Students with a strong research interest will have an opportunity and are encouraged to conduct independent experiments and pursue scientific curiosity.

Position Duties
30% Plant breeding research project support:
  • Conduct laboratory experiments such as flow cytometry, pollen staining, pollen germination, etc.
  • Perform controlled crosses in a glasshouse and field setting
  • Collect and compile data such as growth measurements, flowering and fruiting quantities & dates, seedling germination, and other data used for breeding and patent preparation
  • General support for the setup and execution of plant breeding and research projects

60% Assist in the maintenance and growing of container and field-grown plants:
  • Weeding, potting, pruning, labeling, transplanting, watering, fertilizing and pest scouting of ornamental plants
  • Assist in propagation of select ornamental species

10% Prepare Other duties as assigned:
  • Must successfully complete and maintain appropriate farm, lab and greenhouse safety training and certifications
  • Communicate through discussions, presentations, and written reports with other team members in Ornamental Plant Breeding, other research programs at OSU, and professional growers
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Interest in research, plant breeding, nursery crops, and/or landscape plants
  • Capacity for detailed work including microscopy, emasculating small flowers, and collection of fine measurements
  • Ability to work in both collaborative and independent work environments
  • Must be able to work in all types of weather
  • Must be able to walk, stand, bend and stoop for extended periods • Ability to maneuver and transport heavy objects up to 50 pounds
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Horticulture majors or others with strong interest in nursery and landscape industries. • A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity • Coursework or experience in Horticulture, genetics, or related field
