Position Summary
This recruitment is for a student research assistant in a program investigating Phytophthora epidemiology and management, particular of those species impacting woody horticultural crops and native forests (for example: Phytophthora ramorum).
Research duties include the transfer and maintenance of plant pathogen cultures of fungi and oomycetes, inoculation of plants, experiment set-up, data collection, and data entry. The student will also perform basic lab maintenance (dish washing, agar media preparation) and greenhouse (fertilizing, up-potting) tasks. Opportunities to assist researchers in sample and data collection at remote field locations are available. Depending on the students’ ability to meet/exceed the expectations of this position, opportunities to perform an independent project may be presented.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
The ability to closely follow directions, pay attention to detail, work independently without supervision, and communicate professionally are required.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
We prefer students with a background/interest in plant pathology, botany, forest health, horticulture, soil science, or microbiology. Students with an interest in performing both field work and lab bench work (for example, experiments utilizing sterile technique and DNA extraction & PCR diagnostics) are especially encouraged to apply.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Work is mainly performed in scientific laboratory, research greenhouses, and office settings. Field work includes rigorous hiking and sample collection in coastal forests of Oregon and California. Field work will likely include exposure to poison oak.
