Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill numerous part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Peer Tutor positions for the TRIO Student Support Services Program at Oregon State University (OSU).

SSS Peer Tutors work individually and with small groups of SSS students over the course of the term (week 2 through week 10) to help them better understand course material and prepare for assignments and exams. In addition to helping students with course content, Peer Tutors share study strategies and demonstrate methods for how students can find the answers for themselves, with the goal that through tutoring.

TRIO SSS students build the skills that will allow them to excel in their classes. Tutors must become familiar with tutoring strategies that equip students with active learning skills. TRIO SSS tutors need to have successfully completed any courses that they tutor with a B or higher (in some cases they must currently be taking the course).

Training will be provided to become acquainted with the tutoring format of the program.

Anticipated Hourly Wage: $15.15

Position Duties
  • Tutor students individually or in small groups
  • Ongoing training and professional development
  • Coordinating meetings directly with students and maintaining documentation
  • Group and individual meetings with supervisor
  • Assisting at quarterly study sessions
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • An interest in helping others be successful in college
  • Experience interacting with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Previous success in some of the most commonly tutored courses (MTH 111-252, PH series, ECON, ST, etc.)
  • The ability to arrange a tutoring schedule directly with students and manage one’s own schedule

Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • 3.0 GPA or above
  • Work-study preferred
  • Experience tutoring others (paid or unpaid)
  • Current or past TRIO, CAMP, or EOP enrollment/involvement
  • An understanding of the SSS student population (first-generation college students, low-income students, and students with disabilities)
