We are seeking an inspiring and strategic Head of Data Science Team to maximise the impact of British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) data, ensuring it informs research, policy, planning and conservation management across the UK. Leading the delivery of key elements of the Delivering Data Action Area of the BTO Strategy 2023–30, you will shape the development of accessible, robust and engaging data products that meet the needs of diverse audiences. You will oversee the development of analytical workflows, data management and quality assurance processes, working collaboratively across science, surveys, communications and information systems teams to ensure BTO’s data delivers meaningful impact.
You will lead and develop the newly-created Data Science Team, providing strategic direction, managing projects and resources, securing funding and building strong partnerships with internal and external stakeholders. Combining scientific expertise with hands-on data analysis and product development, you will drive innovation through reproducible analytical methods, modelling and emerging data science techniques.
You will bring a PhD in a relevant quantitative discipline or equivalent experience, a strong track record in applied data science and ecological analysis, proven leadership and project management and communication skills. A passion for developing people, translating complex data into accessible insights, and supporting evidence-based conservation will be essential; knowledge of BTO surveys, ornithology, biodiversity monitoring and spatial analysis would be an advantage.
This position is based at our HQ in Thetford, Norfolk, although you will be able to work from home part of the time on a hybrid working regime and flexible start and finish times can also be accommodated to ensure a good work-life balance.
You can read the full role description by clicking on the role description under 'supporting documents' in the job details on our careers page. Please contact us if you are not sure if you meet all the criteria for the role and would like to discuss the role in more detail.
Please note that, if you are the successful candidate, you will be required to provide documentary evidence of your right to live and work in the UK. Unfortunately, we are not able to offer visa sponsorship at this time.
The heart of BTO encompasses three key areas: birds, science, people. We work to secure a better future for birds and nature, using our science, monitoring and data to inform good environmental decisions, inspiring others with the wonder of birds and empowering them to work with us. Our priority is to make a positive impact for birds, using our strong and objective science in partnership with other organisations, members and volunteers. We strive to work sustainably and to welcome everyone.
