Since 2011, the organization has provided about $160 million in grants to more than 130 organizations in 50 countries to establish marine protected areas, stop overfishing, and constrain offshore oil and gas development. Its activities are directed by a Board of Advisors that include 25 philanthropic institutions. It is staffed by a group of seasoned professionals in eight countries that speak more than ten languages. It also currently houses and manages three separate directed funds aligned with its mission at the request of its donors. These funds include the Joint 30x30 Funding Initiative, the Bloomberg Ocean Fund, and the Ocean Climate Diplomacy Initiative.
Oceans 5 works closely with civil society and Indigenous organizations to design collaborative projects and campaigns to influence government decisions through advocacy, research, communications, and capacity building, often leveraging opportunities presented by new elections, appointments, and policy changes. Oceans 5 grantees have a remarkable record of accomplishment, having been instrumental in the most impactful ocean conservation initiatives of the past decade.
Pacific Program Manager: The Pacific Program Manager will identify grantmaking opportunities to advance sustainable fisheries and secure protected areas consistent with the priorities of Pacific Island civil society organizations, governments, and traditional leaders. It is a full-time position, responsible for a range of activities including project scoping, development, monitoring, and evaluation, as well as providing support to Oceans 5 donors.
The Pacific Program Manager is a new position that will be part of a global team of program managers with geographic responsibilities for Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, North America, the Caribbean, and the High Seas. The global team works closely with colleagues across the suite of funds managed under Oceans 5 to develop projects and partnerships to implement grantmaking strategies, as well as with other partners like the Shark Conservation Fund. Collectively, the team implements a global strategy that is rooted firmly in local knowledge and respect.
The position will support many elements of the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, focusing on grants to support sustainable fisheries in coastal communities, establish protected areas for biodiversity conservation, and to mitigate the effects of climate change. Its geographic focus will include the high seas. The position reports to a Program Director and is based out of this person’s home office.
