Ocean Job Board
Santiago, Santiago Metropolitan Region, Chile
Do you want to make a difference protecting the health of our oceans and the communities who rely on them? Come join our team in Chile – dedicated professionals campaigning for our oceans along one of the longest coastlines in the world, where the nutrient-rich waters of the Humboldt Current sustain some of the planet’s most productive fisheries, feed millions of people, and support the livelihoods of coastal communities and artisanal fishers.
Founded in 2001, Oceana is the world’s largest nonprofit organization focused solely on ocean advocacy. We achieve measurable change by conducting specific, science-based campaigns with fixed deadlines and clearly articulated goals. Our campaigns focus on reforming policy in countries that are responsible for a quarter of the world’s wild-caught fish, including Belize, Brazil, Chile, Ghana, Mexico, Peru, the Philippines, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and the 27 countries of the European Union.
Oceana is seeking a Vice President/Executive Director to lead our campaigns, our staff team and the organization’s operations in Chile. For this important role, Oceana seeks an innovative and highly motivated leader with strong ambition, creativity, and determination, and a well-honed instinct for achieving public policy decisions at the national level. The Vice President must be able to articulate a vision, set ambitious and effective campaign goals, and inspire and motivate campaign leaders and teams to achieve measurable outcomes. This person will be responsible for all aspects of Oceana’s work in Chile – campaigns, policy and science, marketing and communications, development, and finance and administration – providing oversight to the work of approximately 15 staff based in Santiago. Reporting to Senior Vice President Dr. Liesbeth van der Meer, the incumbent will serve as an integral member of Oceana’s senior leadership team and will be a highly visible representative of Oceana and its work, both internally with staff and the Board of Directors, and externally with funders, decision makers, media, and other key constituencies. The Vice President will be a relentless promoter of Oceana and a savvy marketer and fundraiser, helping to secure ongoing financial resources for the organization in partnership with the global development department.
Strong candidates for this position will have 10+ years of professional experience, including a solid track record of leadership, strategic planning, and management of an organization in a multicultural environment. Strong candidates will also have demonstrated success in organizational marketing and fundraising, a working knowledge of Chile’s government, public policy, and political environment, and an education in marine science, international or development policy, law, communications, social entrepreneurship, social justice or another relevant field; an advanced degree is preferred. Fluency in English is required, and proficiency in other languages is a strong plus. Willingness to travel up to 30%, within Chile and internationally, is expected.
Oceana values a diverse workforce and welcomes people different from each other in many ways, including characteristics such as race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, and national origin. Oceana considers all qualified candidates and seeks to recruit from a diverse candidate pool.
