Senior Communications Director, Europe

The oceans connect us all. They cover two-thirds of our blue planet and sustain most of the life on Earth. Yet they face unprecedented threats – from overfishing and habitat destruction to plastic pollution, offshore drilling, and the killing of threatened species like turtles, whales, and sharks.

Oceana is the world’s largest international advocacy organization dedicated solely to ocean conservation. We campaign around the globe to win science-based policies that rebuild abundant, biodiverse oceans – and we’re winning. With the help of our allies, Oceana has achieved more than 325 policy victories that protect marine life, habitats, and coastal communities.

Why Join Oceana

Position Overview

The Senior Communications Director is a newly created senior leadership role within Oceana Europe, reporting directly to the Executive Director. This position leads the development and implementation of an integrated communications and marketing strategy that strengthens Oceana’s brand, grows public support, influences decision-makers, and directly advances campaign and fundraising objectives.

The Senior Director manages a team of seven communications professionals and oversees all aspects of external communications across European markets — including media relations, digital communications, brand management, content development, and strategic marketing. The role also provides leadership during high-profile campaign moments and crisis communications scenarios, and serves as a core member of the European Senior Leadership Team.

The ideal candidate brings a minimum of 12 years of experience in communications, public relations, journalism, or related fields, preferably within advocacy or environmental sectors, along with a strong track record in media relations, digital strategy, team leadership, and stakeholder management. Oral and written proficiency in English is required; fluency in additional European languages such as French, German, or Spanish is an advantage.

This position is based in Brussels, Belgium; Madrid, Spain; or Copenhagen, Denmark. Oceana’s offices work on a hybrid in-person office model, with 3 days in the office.

The salary range for this role is €85,000 – €110,000. The actual salary offer will depend on the candidate’s exact work location, qualifications, relevant experience, and internal pay equity relative to current employees in similar roles.

Candidates need to submit their resume and cover letter to be considered. The role involves regular travel, primarily within Europe, with occasional intercontinental travel.

Applications will be assessed upon receipt; early submission is encouraged. Due to the high volume of applications, only successful candidates will be contacted. Please submit your application by June 29, 2026.
