Its North American, South American, European, and Asian offices work together on many strategic campaigns to achieve measurable results in reducing pollution, marine management and conservation for the seas in each country. OCEANA invests in science to identify problems and find solutions.

OCEANA’s office in Brazil is headquartered in Brasília and works with the government, the society, the fishing sector, and scientists to influence changes and necessary adjustments in policies, management, and marine fishing activity. Our strategic goals are to encourage adequate exploitation and consumption of target fish species, the protections of fish nurseries and spawning, as well as mitigation of by-catch and other EEZ impacts, to restore and maintain the abundance and wealth of our seas, while ensuring the livelihood of those whose who depend on the oceans. OCEANA believes that through adequate management and consumption, the oceans will be able to feed the growing human population. For these reasons, our mission statement is “Save the Oceans. The Marine Scientist will work as part of the Oceana team on Marine Conservation Campaigns. To fulfill the objectives of the campaigns, the Scientist will carry out research on problems related to fishing activities, produce campaign materials, internal documents and technical reports. The Scientist will report to the Senior Marine Scientist and the position is based in Brasília-DF, with a hybrid work format.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Monitor, compile and analyze works and publications related to fishing and environmental activities, whether of a scientific, legislative, executive, judicial and/or sectoral nature;
  • Represent Oceana in meetings, seminars, external events and public hearings, as well as monitoring and monitoring their results/referrals;
  • Contribute to the design and execution of marine conservation campaigns in Brazil;
  • Prepare technical reports;
  • Prepare and review material for internal and external communication to ensure scientific credibility;
  • Carry out stakeholder mapping and prospecting;
  • Analyze primary and secondary data. Prepare maps and shapefiles;
  • Translate reports and texts from Portuguese to English, and vice versa;
  • Perform other activities assigned by the supervisor.

Academic Background and Work Experience:

  • Degree in the environmental field (Oceanography, Biology, Environmental Management, Environmental Sciences, Ecology, Sustainable Development or related areas);
  • At least 5 years relevant professional experience in the area of fishing, fisheries management, biology, ecology of fishing resources and ecosystems, environment, socioeconomics, protected areas, marine conservation; Related experience or a relevant combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Familiarity with MS Office software and the internet;
  • Familiarity with software and mapping tools (GIS) (desirable);
  • Programming (R) (desirable).

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in Portuguese and English;
  • Availability to national and international travel, working independently or as part of a delegation;

  • Driving license (B).

Oceana's offices operate on a hybrid schedule. Staff are required to work from their assigned office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. With agreement between the employee and their supervisor, the employee may work from home on Monday and Friday. Please apply by April 24, 2026.
