OCEANA is the largest organization working exclusively on ocean conservation. Established in 2001 and based in Washington, D.C., OCEANA works on many strategic campaigns to achieve measurable results in marine management and conservation for the seas in each country. OCEANA believes especially in the importance of science to identify problems and find solutions.

The Ghana office, the first OCEANA office in Africa which opened early 2026, will campaign alongside coastal communities to rebuild fish populations, increase vital nutrition, and strengthen livelihoods. The office headquarters is in Accra.

The Senior Manager of Communications will report to the Vice President and will be responsible for leading the development and execution of Oceana’s communications strategies for its various campaigns in Ghana. The Senior Manager will build relationships with the media and identify opportunities to promote Oceana’s brand as the leading, authoritative voice for our oceans, and build visibility and public support for our work in Ghana. This role will help shape Oceana’s public position on key issues and ensure that Oceana’s website, digital platforms and social media channels are optimized in support of our campaign and organizational goals in Ghana. The role provides strategic leadership in planning, implementing, and managing overall communication, branding, and advocacy strategies. The Senior Manager will work closely with the Vice President in setting, implementing and evaluating overall organizational policies and priorities.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

  • Create and execute press and communications strategies to achieve Oceana objectives.
  • Work with the Vice President and the Campaigns & Advocacy Director in ensuring that our communication strategies and plans align with our campaign goals, organizational strategies, and donor requirements.
  • Maintain and strengthen the organization’s brand identity and public image.
  • Oversee the development of communication materials including media/press kits for Oceana campaigns and activities.
  • Develop, grow, and maintain a strong productive relationship with both print and broadcast media as well as all other media and communications channels.
  • Oversee the preparation and dissemination of press releases, statements, and opinion pieces.
  • Ensure adequate monitoring of Oceana’s media coverage, including analysis of key narratives and developments relevant to the organization’s advocacy areas.
  • Ensure that all press, social media releases are properly coordinated with the Vice President and Campaigns, Field, Legal and Science teams for accuracy, needed legal checks and message alignment.
  • Oversee the organization’s website, social media presence, and digital campaigns, making sure they are constantly updated and optimized in support of organizational and campaign goals.
  • Support in the growth of Oceana’s supporters, known as Wavemakers in Ghana through development of relevant content to keep them engaged.
  • Ensure effective use of online platforms to increase visibility, audience engagement, and public mobilization when needed.
  • Analyze communication metrics to measure impact and inform future strategies.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or delegated by the Vice President.

Job Requirements

Education and work experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, mass communications, marketing, public relations. or relevant subject with a Master’s degree preferred. Equivalent combination of education and administrative experience required.
  • At least 6 years of communications experience with 2 years in the non-profit sector.

Skills and knowledge:

  • Skilled writer with experience in drafting opinion pieces, press releases, video scripts and or other related media materials
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality in working with sensitive data, and possess excellent judgment in handling communications, expenses, and budgets,
  • Ability to represent Oceana in a professional and courteous manner with scientists, policymakers, stakeholders, and the media.
  • Ability to accommodate a varied workload in a fast-paced campaign environment.
  • Experience with international media a plus.
  • Occasional travel will be required.
  • Valid authorization to work in Ghana.
