Oceana seeks a Graphic Designer to join Oceana’s dynamic and fast-paced Global Marketing and Communications team. The Graphic Designer is responsible for creating compelling visuals (in print and web) for a variety of audiences (e.g., media, elected officials, funders, and supporters) to help support Oceana’s mission. Additionally, the Graphic Designer will work across the organization to support Oceana’s U.S. and global campaigns, fundraising efforts, supporter growth and outreach, and increasing visibility for the organization’s brand. The Graphic Designer reports to Oceana’s Creative Director and will be based in Washington, DC.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
- Conceptualize and develop high-level strategic materials, including reports, fact sheets, infographics, Print PSAs and advertisements, and social media graphics
- Work with Creative Director to help continue to grow and elevate Oceana’s visual brand identity, and review materials to ensure brand guideline fidelity
- Provide support to Multimedia Producers with graphic elements for videos and animations
- Provide photo support, including headshots, store product photos, and events
- Develop and elevate materials for Oceana branding, including side brands, like LegaSea and Sailors for the Sea
- Assist with the production of reports and other materials, working closely with the campaign teams, communications staff, and outside vendors
- Design collateral materials, such as cards, invitations, and giveaways
- Design presentations for senior management, EC members, and other experts
- Develop graphics for our social media channels, including Facebook, X, and Instagram
- Manage Oceana’s designed materials and other visual assets, including photos
- Provide design support for Oceana’s U.S. and International website, including the blog
- Assist with other Global Marcomm activities as needed
Job Requirements
Education and Work Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or related field
- At least three years of experience in related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
Skills and Knowledge:
- Strong graphic design skills and familiarity with materials design
- Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud Suite (special focus on InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator), Microsoft Office Suite (special focus on PowerPoint) and other primary graphic design programs
- Strong photography skills, including shooting and editing digital photos
- Strong writing, editing, and verbal communication skills adaptable to a variety of audiences
- Superior attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to synthesize and convey complicated information quickly and accurately for lay audiences
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively as a team player to coordinate projects, and work effectively with a variety of personalities
- Ability to meet strict deadlines and work under pressure while maintaining humor and high energy
- Ability to adapt to a fast-changing environment, manage multiple assignments, and coordinate with all levels within the organization
- Ability to approach problems with a sense of ownership, enthusiasm, and innovation

- Experience with WordPress is a plus
- Multimedia visual storytelling experience is a plus, including knowledge of digital video, animation, photography, audio, and production processes and workflows
- Familiarity with web design is a plus
- In-depth knowledge of social media tools, networks, and online communities is a plus
- Interest in ocean conservation and Oceana’s campaigns is a plus
- Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus

This position is based in Washington, D.C. Oceana's US offices operate on a hybrid schedule and staff are required to work from their assigned office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. With an agreement between the employee and their supervisor, the employee may work from home Monday and Friday.
The salary range for this position is $60,000 to $70,000 annually.
