Oceana is seeking a Digital Content Specialist to bring our mission and story to life across multiple digital platforms, supporting the organization’s ambitious engagement goals. This role will play a key part in our social media and community management efforts, while also developing compelling digital storytelling across our social, website, and email communications.
The ideal candidate is a creative and strategic thinker who excels at crafting engaging content, analyzing performance metrics, and optimizing content strategies to deepen audience engagement and grow digital audiences. The Content Specialist participates in all digital team meetings and strategy sessions, contributing ideas and insights to enhance Oceana’s digital communications. This position is based in Washington, DC and reports to the Senior Director of Strategic Marketing.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
- Craft compelling, story-driven content that translates complex ocean conservation topics into accessible, engaging narratives for diverse audiences.
- Support the creation of digital content across multiple platforms, including social media, website, email, and advocacy campaigns.
- Collaborate with designers, videographers, and campaign teams to produce high-quality multimedia content (videos, graphics, animations, and more).
- Optimize content for SEO, accessibility, and user engagement.
- Oversee social media monitoring and community engagement, ensuring timely responses and fostering meaningful conversations.
- Coordinate the recruitment of micro-influencers and influencer content production across channels and key campaigns throughout the year. [CD1] [KJ2]
- Track trends and conversations to ensure Oceana’s social presence remains relevant and impactful.
- Analyze performance metrics and adjust strategies based on insights to improve engagement and reach.
- Work closely within the digital team to ensure coordinated messaging across fundraising, advocacy, and awareness campaigns.
- Participate in weekly digital team meetings and strategy sessions, bringing fresh ideas and insights to help refine Oceana’s digital approach.
- Assist in the development and execution of email and SMS campaigns, ensuring a cohesive storytelling approach across all digital touchpoints.
Job Requirements
Education and experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field, such as marketing or communications, and at least three years of professional experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience with Constituent Relationship Management databases like Engaging Networks, Salesforce, or others.
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite or other content creation tools.
- Experience with content management systems (CMS), email marketing platforms, and social media tools.[CD3]
Skills and knowledge:
- Exceptional writing and editing skills, with a strong ability to craft engaging narratives for digital audiences.
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy
- Experience managing social media platforms, community engagement, and performance analytics.
- Strong understanding of SEO, accessibility best practices, and digital content optimization.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Passion for ocean conservation and environmental advocacy is a plus.
