Oceana is the largest international advocacy organization dedicated exclusively to ocean conservation. Guided by science, we work to restore ocean abundance and ensure the health of marine biodiversity through policy change. Our campaigns deliver tangible results, with over 300 victories against overfishing, habitat destruction, oil and plastic pollution, and the loss of threatened species. We collaborate with governments, civil society, the private sector, and scientists to improve public policies related to fisheries management, marine pollution prevention, habitat protection, and more.
Position Summary
The Communication Intern will join Oceana’s team to support the organization’s mission of protecting oceans by fostering societal mobilization and engagement, strengthening Oceana’s image, and contributing to the success of its campaigns. The role involves creating online and offline content for institutional and campaign purposes across different platforms, covering events, monitoring press coverage, assisting with reports, conducting research on specific topics, and supporting vendor management, among other tasks.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Support the implementation of actions outlined in the Strategic Communication and Engagement Plan.
- Assist in creating digital and print content, such as blogs, email marketing, brochures, and guides, for social media, websites, and offline activities.
- Provide routine support to the communication team, including website updates, press release distribution, and media monitoring.
- Contribute to the proposal, scheduling, and formatting of the monthly newsletter.
- Assist in the development of graphic and audiovisual materials.
- Help manage and update databases and contact mailing lists.
- Organize audiovisual files on the organization’s international platforms.
- Attend seminars, external events, courses, and public hearings, and prepare summaries or write articles.
- Support the organization of in-person and online events.
- Participate in internal and external meetings with Oceana’s team as needed.
- Conduct communication and narrative research (counter-narratives, benchmarking, etc.).
- Assist in mapping, prospecting, and liaising with suppliers.
- Translate notes and short texts between Portuguese and English as required.
- Send publications, gifts, and other materials.
- Demonstrate interest and appreciation for interactions and collaborations with partner organizations and social movements in Oceana’s fisheries and marine plastic pollution campaigns.
Academic Background and Professional Experience
- Enrolled in a bachelor’s program in Communication, Journalism, Organizational Communication, Public Relations, Advertising, or related fields (minimum requirement: completion of the 4th semester).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in Portuguese; good command of English.
- Familiarity with MS Office software.
- Basic knowledge of graphic design tools (Photoshop, Canva, Illustrator), video editing software (Adobe Premiere, Final Cut, etc.), and presentation tools (PowerPoint).
