Ocean Science & Impact Fellow, Science and Strategy
General Summary
The Ocean Science & Impact Fellow – a key member of Oceana’s Science & Strategy team – helps develop the scientific foundation for our work on measuring impact, supports data collection and metrics tracking and development, and prepares technical reports, to help achieve Oceana’s mission and drive our Save the Oceans, Feed the World initiative. The Ocean Science & Impact Fellow researches technical topics, synthesizes data, articulates the relevance of new research in the context of Oceana’s work, and produces briefings for a wide range of audiences including senior leadership and external stakeholders. This position works with data from a wide range of sources, is comfortable using analytical programs/software, and is knowledgeable about a range of technical topics. This position requires a combination of equally strong research, analytical, and communication skills and involves teamwork, project management, and organizing small events. This 1-year, term limited, full-time position reports to the Research Director, Science & Strategy, is based in our Washington, DC office, and requires occasional travel.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions:
- Support metrics tracking and development for campaign evaluation, especially related to climate change, transparency, plastic pollution, fisheries, and habitat protection.
- Contribute to research efforts for major organizational initiatives including intersections of fisheries, food and nutrition security, equity and justice in the blue economy, and transparency in distant water fishing activities.
- Support outreach and communications on the above and other topics by developing written reports, blog posts, and infographics.
- Assist with organizing and logistics for internal and external meetings.
- Support Research Director and other team members in project management and administration.
- Evaluate internal and external materials for scientific integrity, accurate portrayal of complex issues, and campaign sensitivities; review and update internal and external-facing resources and materials (fact sheets, presentations, trainings, etc.), and verify their scientific accuracy.
- Represent Oceana in a professional and responsive manner, while maintaining strict confidentiality when working with sensitive information.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
Education and work experience:
- Master’s degree in a relevant scientific discipline such as marine biology, ecology, or environmental science, and a minimum of two years of professional experience in marine science or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience required
- Experience working and building relationships across different cultures and/or multiple disciplines/backgrounds
- Proficiency in French strongly preferred
Skills and knowledge:
- Ability to accurately synthesize large amounts of information, quickly identify relevant issues or questions, and recommend responses or solutions, including on new topics that you may or may not have previous experience in
- Comfort communicating technical concepts clearly and concisely, written and verbally, to a wide range of audiences
- Working knowledge of marine conservation, marine ecosystems, fisheries management, fisheries economics and/or distant water fisheries
- Proficiency in one or more data analysis and visualization tools such as R, ArcGIS, and Excel
- Adaptability to a varied workload; occasional long hours, weekend events, alternative hours to accommodate international time zones, and travel are required
- Ability to work independently and handle multiple tasks simultaneously in a dynamic work environment with speed, accuracy, and a positive attitude

The salary range for this position is $42,640 - $52,000 annually

Oceana's US offices have operated on a hybrid schedule and staff have been required to work from their assigned office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. With agreement between the employee and their supervisor, the employee may work from home on Monday and Friday. Please apply by March 1st, 2025.
