General Summary:

Oceana seeks a Law Fellow with full or partial outside funding to assist the Legal Department. The Law Fellow position is designed for a current law school student in their 3L year of a J.D. degree or a lawyer pursuing an LL.M. degree, who has an interest in ocean conservation and environmental law.

The Law Fellow will perform legal and factual research, review and analyze records related to rulemakings or litigation, draft research memoranda and legal documents, analyze legislation and help implement lobbying strategies, attend court or Congressional hearings, undertake general administrative tasks, and participate in legal staff meetings. The Law Fellow may also be asked to support Oceana’s corporate legal compliance needs. The Law Fellow is expected to work full-time for one year, beginning Winter 2025.

The position is based in Washington, D.C.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

The Law Fellow works closely with the Senior Counsel and Staff Attorney. The Law Fellow is responsible for the following:

  • Working with a variety of domestic laws, including the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, the Endangered Species Act, and the Marine Mammal Protection Act, as well as international treaties;
  • Developing and supporting strategic litigation;
  • Drafting comment letters on administrative agency proposals;
  • Providing legal advice to Oceana campaign staff;
  • Performing legal and factual research on legal matters related to Oceana’s campaigns;
  • Analyzing legislation related to marine conservation and Oceana campaigns;
  • Helping to implement lobbying strategies; and
  • Supporting the environmental advocacy work of Oceana
  • Attending court or Congressional hearings
  • Participating in regularly scheduled Legal Department and campaign meetings; and
  • Conducting legal analysis on campaign initiatives.

Job Requirements:

Education and Work Experience:

Applicants should possess a law degree by the start of the fellowship.

Compensation:

  • $65,000 - $70,000 to be funded in full or partially by fellowship funding from outside organizations.

Oceana's US offices have operated on a hybrid schedule and staff have been required to work from their assigned office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. With an agreement between the employee and their supervisor, the employee may work from home Monday and Friday.
