Direct Response Specialist

The Direct Response Specialist provides support to Ocean’s multichannel direct response marketing program, with a focus on expanding the organization’s outreach and retention of supporters. The Specialist will ensure Oceana’s “Wavemakers” or grassroots supporters receive excellent care, including sending acknowledgments to offline donors, outreach to lapsed one-time and monthly donors, and membership services requests. This position will also gain experience and provide support to the organization’s low-dollar fundraising and advocacy campaigns, including but not limited to drafting and editing content for email, SMS, direct mail, website, and various social media channels. Our digital team works every day to be more effective and creative at online fundraising and advocacy. The Specialist takes part in digital team meetings and strategy sessions, contributing their ideas and perspective. This position is based in Washington, DC and reports to the Senior Manager of Direct Response Fundraising.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Essential functions:
- Work with the Senior Director of Strategic Marketing and Senior Manager of Direct Response Fundraising to strategize to meet overall department goals, particularly revenue, by developing multichannel marketing campaigns.
- Manage inquiries from donors and supporters via mail, email, and phone.
- Manage offline stewardship activities for donors, including surprise and delight mailings, acknowledgements, and our tribute and peer to peer fundraising programs.
- Implement an overall stewardship strategy for low-dollar donors including check donors, store customers, those who donate through workplace giving and aggregator portals, and other revenue streams.
- Work with the Senior Manager to support the mid-level giving program.
- Collaborate with internal teams – such as Creative and Social Media – to produce content for digital communications.
- Ensure donors from aggregator sites such as Network for Good are brought into our Constituent Relationship Management (CRM) system and online communication streams.
- Produce and analyze regular reporting to optimize fundraising efforts.
- Assist in quality control of digital campaign implementation.

Job Requirements
Education and experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field, such as marketing or communications, and at least 1 year of professional experience is preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least 1 year of experience in donor, constituent, or member service is preferred.
- Experience with Adobe Suite or other content creation tools.
- Experience with Constituent Relationship Management databases like Engaging. Networks, Salesforce, or others is a plus.
Skills and knowledge:
- Excellent donor, constituent, or member service skills.
- Excellent persuasive writing and storytelling skills, with fact-checking or copy-editing experience.
- Excellent organization and time management skills, with attention to detail.
- Ability to meet strict deadlines and adapt to a fast-changing environment.
- Data- and goal-driven, inquisitive thinker familiar with testing and optimization.
- Google Analytics experience or experience with other analytics software is a plus.
- Ability to work well on a team, as well as accept feedback and integrate it graciously.
- Passion for ocean conservation and the environment.

The salary range for this position is $60,000 – 67,000 annually.
Oceana's US offices have operated on a hybrid schedule and staff have been required to work from their assigned office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. With an agreement between the employee and their supervisor, the employee may work from home Monday and Friday.
