General Summary

Supporters around the globe power Oceana’s campaigns to protect and restore the world’s oceans. With more than 300 victories that stop overfishing, habitat destruction, oil and plastic pollution, and the killing of threatened species like turtles, whales, and sharks, Oceana’s campaigns are delivering results. The Senior Director of Strategic Marketing will play a pivotal role in raising Oceana’s global profile, expanding our supporter base, and driving revenue from low-dollar and mid-level donors. This role demands an experienced leader with a strong data-driven mindset, who can create innovative marketing strategies that deliver results.

The Senior Director of Strategic Marketing is responsible for positioning Oceana as the largest and most effective international advocacy organization dedicated solely to ocean conservation. This position manages a team of five highly motivated individuals who oversee Oceana’s low-dollar and mid-level fundraising and digital advocacy programs, as well as the organization’s website, ecommerce, advertising, and social media strategies.

The ideal candidate is a strategic marketer with a proven track record of using data-driven approaches to maximize impact, enhance visibility, grow supporter bases, and increase revenue from donors.

The Senior Director of Strategic Marketing reports to Oceana’s Vice President of Global Marketing and Communications, collaborates closely with numerous teams and departments across the organization, and is based in Washington, DC.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Essential functions:

  • Oversee Oceana’s international marketing program and budget, across multiple channels, with a focus on growth, innovation, and data-driven decision-making
  • Leverage data and analytics to drive strategy, decision-making, and execution across all marketing channels
  • Lead and grow a team of five skilled practitioners, creating an environment that fosters creativity and results
  • Oversee Oceana’s low-dollar and mid-level fundraising efforts across email, website, direct mail, telemarketing, and SMS platforms
  • Oversee digital advocacy strategies across email, social media, and Oceana’s website, increasing engagements and conversions
  • Oversee Oceana’s online presence, including the organization’s website, online store, advertising, and social media strategies, ensuring a consistent and powerful brand message
  • Oversee the use of best practices for content marketing and search engine optimization (SEO) on Oceana’s international website to drive traffic and key conversions such as Join, Act, Shop, and Donate
  • Oversee Oceana’s member services strategy to ensure a seamless supporter experience
  • Oversee Oceana’s customer relationship management (CRM) system and external vendors to drive performance across marketing and fundraising efforts
  • Oversee the creation of compelling fundraising, advocacy, and marketing content that resonates with diverse audiences in support of Oceana’s mission
  • Support Oceana’s country offices as they develop localized marketing, fundraising, and digital advocacy strategies
  • Act as Oceana’s in-house expert on marketing trends and emerging technologies, ensuring that the organization remains at the forefront of the industry
  • Perform other duties as needed to achieve organizational goals

Job Requirements

Education and experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, Business Administration, Communications, or a related field required
  • Master’s degree in marketing, Business Administration, Nonprofit Management, or a related field is preferred but not required
  • 10-15 years of professional experience in marketing, fundraising, or communications roles, with substantial experience leading multi-channel marketing strategies in mission-driven or commercial sectors
  • Demonstrated experience in managing and mentoring teams, fostering collaboration, and driving performance in fast-paced environments
  • Non-profit experience is preferred, but candidates with relevant experience in for-profit, mission-driven sectors are encouraged to apply
  • A track record of increasing revenue from low-dollar and mid-level donors across multiple channels (email, direct mail, telemarketing, SMS, and others) is strongly preferred
  • A track record of increasing brand visibility, website traffic, and supporter engagement through innovative strategies across SEO, content marketing, and social media is strongly preferred
  • Experience managing CRM systems, customer service operations, and digital marketing tools such as Salesforce, Engaging Networks, and Google Analytics
  • Prior experience in an international organization applying global knowledge and perspective to ensure a broad view of issues and challenges
  • Track record of building effective relationships with people from different cultures and countries
  • Strong commitment to Oceana’s mission and values

Skills and knowledge:

  • Proven experience in developing and executing data-driven marketing strategies, with an emphasis on testing, measurement, and continuous optimization to improve ROI and marketing effectiveness
  • Demonstrated ability to create sustainable systems and structures to improve efficiency
  • Proven track record in developing and executing marketing strategies that drive growth and brand awareness
  • Expertise in budget management, forecasting, and strategic planning is strongly preferred
  • Excellent team leadership abilities, with experience fostering collaboration and creativity among staff
  • Strong digital marketing skills, with knowledge of the latest trends in social media, content marketing, and online fundraising is strongly preferred
  • Superior communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to tailor messages to different audiences
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams and managing vendor relationships
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, meet strict deadlines, and adapt to a fast-paced, dynamic work environment
  • Strong attention to detail and exceptional organizational skills

The salary range for this position is $150-160K annually.

Oceana's US offices have operated on a hybrid schedule and staff have been required to work from their assigned office on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. With agreement between the employee and their supervisor, the employee may work from home Monday and Friday
