Oceana is seeking a US Accounting Manager. The US Accounting Manager will manage all accounting functions for Oceana’s US entity. The position is responsible for the effective performance of US accounting functions, including bank reconciliations, journal entries, analysis of general ledger accounts, enforcement of internal policies and conducting organizational staff training. This will include ledger maintenance, accounts payable, accounts receivable, revenue and asset accounting, financial analysis and reporting, all in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRSs). The Manager will also oversee Oceana’s payroll operations and will support the completion of Oceana’s global statutory audit. The Accounting Manager is responsible for reliable and timely preparation of internal and external reports related to all accounting responsibilities.

The Manager will ensure that project/department milestones/goals are met and will evaluate, design, and make improvements to accounting processes while ensuring that practices comply with organization accounting policies and applicable laws and regulations. The Accounting Manager will supervise and mentor a team of professional staff. This position reports to the Global Sr. Director of Finance and is based in Washington, DC.

Principal Duties, Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Use strong management skills to achieve accounting team human resource objectives by recruiting, selecting, training, assigning, scheduling, coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees. Communicate job expectations; create annual performance goals, monitor, appraise, and review job contributions.
  • Achieve accounting team operational objectives by contributing information and recommendations to improve internal accounting processes. Prepare and complete action plans; implement production checklists and aids to ensure productivity, quality, and customer-service standards are met; resolve problems; identify trends; determine system improvements; implement changes.
  • Ensure adherence to monthly financial close deadlines on an accrual basis.
  • Review and analyze various reconciliations; research and resolve variances in a coordinated effort with direct reports.
  • Oversee revenue recognition initiatives.
  • Contribute to the preparation of the annual audit and annual tax form 990 preparation with critical focus on revenue recognition and functional expenses.
  • Monitor revenue and expenses; coordinate the collection, consolidation, and evaluation of financial data; prepare reports.
  • Review and approve bi-weekly payroll ensuring accurate and timely submission. Manage various state tax and compliance requests.
  • Oversee and manage annual 403(b) audit.
  • Follow established accounting policies and procedures and recommend improvements.
  • Guide other departments by interpreting accounting policy and applying recommendations to operational issues.
  • Maintain financial security by establishing and complying with internal controls.
  • Monitor emerging technology to determine ways to automate the accounting process without sacrificing accuracy and accountability.
  • Train other finance and accounting staff and non-finance staff on Oceana’s policies and procedures and work to ensure compliance.
  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in business or accounting required and CPA or CPA candidate required and at least seven years of relevant progressive accounting experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience applying United States Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), laws, regulations, and internal policies related to their areas of responsibility. Familiarity with IFRS standards also required.
  • Prior management of professional level Accounting staff experience required
  • Strong Project Management experience required. Experience in implementing a new Accounting system strongly preferred.
  • Prior work experience with NetSuite, ADP, & Workday preferred
  • Experience hiring and managing staff &/or temps/consultants.
  • Experience utilizing complex ERP and ledger system
  • Reliable leader and team player who contributes to a productive working environment with other employees to meet organizational goals.
  • Well-developed written and oral communication and interpersonal skills to ensure effective communication. Able to convey a clear understanding to different audiences.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical skills and problem-solving skills utilizing Microsoft office products. Can make sense of complex, high quantity and sometimes contradictory information to effectively solve problems.
  • Able to effectively prioritize multiple responsibilities in a faced paced environment and perform them with speed, accuracy and courtesy.
  • Possess a strong understanding about the nuances of team dynamics and know how their words and actions impact others. Exercise good judgment to help staff deal with others in an effective way. Able to build partnerships and work collaboratively to meet shared objectives.
  • Able to maintain the highest level of confidentiality regarding payroll and other confidential information.
  • Able to commit to the vision and goals of Oceana.

The salary range for this position is $120,000-125,000 annually.
