Karen Sack, ORRAA Executive Director, shared her thoughts:
“Today the High Seas Treaty enters into force, a landmark moment for our global Ocean and for all those who have worked for decades to bring it to life. For the first time, two-thirds of the Ocean (the areas beyond national jurisdiction) will be able to benefit from protections under international law, that safeguard marine life. It is a gamechanger, enabling countries to collaborate across international waters on ocean protection at scale and contribute to the globally agreed 30×30 target.
Now the real work begins, as countries turn the ambition of the Treaty into action on the water. The High Seas Treaty is an essential building block for us to build a future where the Ocean thrives, and so do we.”
