Position Overview

Reporting to and working closely with the Taiwan Fisheries Senior Manager, the Asia Fisheries Coordinator/Manager (dependent on experience) is a dedicated full-time contract position that will play a key role in advancing O2’s sustainable seafood projects in Taiwan and the larger East Asia region, now and into the future. O2 works in partnership with seafood companies, the government, research institutions, and universities on projects that: 1) support electronic monitoring (EM) program implementation, coordination, and reporting, 2) advance adoption of larger monitoring, control, and surveillance tools and technologies including traceability, 3) improve domestic fisheries management policies in East Asia, and 4) support advancement of fishery improvement project (FIP) and MSC assessment projects. This individual will be a part of a growing team based in Taiwan, and will also actively learn from and collaborate with other members of O2 based in Korea and in the U.S.

Key Responsibilities

Working closely with the Taiwan Fisheries Senior Manager and O2 team members, the Coordinator/Manager will:

  • Conduct planning, coordination, and execution of EM projects, ensuring they align with organizational goals and objectives. Track project timelines, partners, milestones, and deliverables, providing regular updates and addressing any deviations;
  • Serve as a liaison between O2 and our seafood company, EM providers, government, and NGO partners by nurturing relationships with current and prospective partners to advance common goals around sustainability and improving the data collection;
  • Conduct research and analysis (training provided) needed to support fisheries and seafood improvement projects, including those aimed at achieving FIP/Marine Stewardship Council certification and improving Taiwan fisheries management;
  • Offer technical assistance and data review support to clients regarding EMS implementation. Address client queries and provide solutions to technical challenges, ensuring the successful adoption and use of EMS;
  • Organize stakeholder meetings and workshops to facilitate implementation of current work and to develop potential project and partnership opportunities;
  • Provide different types of project management support including project coordination, tracking deliverables, preparing reports, etc.;
  • Identify and scope potential collaborative projects, focusing on areas such as supply chain transparency, traceability systems, and technology application;
  • Represent O2 externally and serve as a trusted point of contact for the organization by effectively engaging with stakeholders including project partners, government and NGOs;
  • Carry out additional tasks as directed by the Taiwan Fisheries Senior Manager including coordinating meetings, event logistics, translation, and interpretation.
  • Excellent written and spoken English and Mandarin language skills;
  • Bachelor’s/university degree in a relevant field;
  • Computer skills sufficient to effectively work in a remote, cloud-based environment including the ability to use Google Workplace and online task management platforms such as Asana;
  • Ability to live and work in Taiwan;
  • Ability to travel extensively, both domestically and internationally;
  • Ability to work across different time zones including some flexibility for morning and evening meetings/events.

Skills & Experience

  • Strong relationship-building skills, with proven ability to connect across diverse and marginalized communities, build alliances, and foster collaboration among multiple stakeholders;
  • Demonstrated commitment to sustainable fisheries, including knowledge of data-driven fishery management, bycatch mitigation, and theory of change approaches;
  • Excellent project management skills, with the ability to plan backwards from goals, anticipate obstacles, prioritize tasks, engage stakeholders appropriately, and deliver results across multiple projects;
  • Results-oriented mindset with a track record of achievement, perseverance in the face of challenges, and focus on outcomes rather than process;
  • Proficiency in professional writing and communication, with the ability to draft emails, reports, and policy feedback clearly and effectively, and collaborate with communications staff on outreach products;
  • Agile and adaptable worker, able to process diverse tasks, balance shifting priorities, and function effectively within a multicultural and international NGO setting;
  • Demonstrated work ethic, integrity, and flexibility, with the capacity to operate independently as well as in teams;
  • Familiarity with Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification, Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs), and data analysis tools is a strong plus;
  • Knowledge of social responsibility and human rights in fisheries or related HR/CSR domains is desirable;
  • Experience engaging with fisheries, seafood industry, environmental NGOs, international development, or policy organizations is a plus;
  • Advanced degree in environmental science, natural resource conservation, fisheries, business, international relations, or other related fields is preferred but not required.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Working outdoors; working onboard vessels at certain times.
  • Virtual position: Ability to work effectively from home and attend in-person meetings and work sessions when needed in Taiwan and internationally.
  • Ability to work in remote locations.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and in a fast paced environment.
  • Ability to work outside of normal working hours to accommodate international team and partners; early morning, evening, and/or weekend work required at certain times.

Travel Requirements:

  • Regional and international travel required.
  • Periodic travel to local/regional project sites.
  • Periodic international travel to project sites and conferences.

Annual compensation for this dedicated contracted role based in Taiwan will be between USD $37,000-$47,000 based on hiring level at Coordinator or Manager level, which will be commensurate with education and experience. This rate is intended to cover contractor’s cost for taxes, insurance, benefits, as well as technology and communications needs. Generous time off for holidays, personal, and sick leave is provided for in our contract terms.

The contractor will be ‘home-based,’ meaning they will support their own work space in a location of their choice in Taiwan; they will become a core member of O2’s virtual team. We aspire to bring the whole team together each year in locations around the world for a team retreat.
