Product Design Engineer

We are seeking a talented and motivated engineer to join our team and help develop the next generation of eDNA and microplastic sampling products.

Position Overview:

As a product design engineer on the R&D team, you will play a crucial role in supporting our strategic development operations and production efforts for the development, prototyping, and testing of both new and existing products. Additionally, you will collaborate with our production team to ensure efficient product assembly and testing processes.

Responsibilities:

Product Design and Prototyping

  • Collaborate with the R&D team to contribute to the design and development of new products, subsystems, support infrastructure, and test assemblies.
  • Generate 3D models, assemblies, drawings, and prototypes to develop, validate and refine product concepts and move them through to production.
  • Actively participate in brainstorming sessions and design reviews to provide creative input to solve design challenges.

Testing and Validation

  • Create and execute data-driven experiments and test procedures to validate product designs and ensure specific requirements are met.
  • Inspect and analyze test results for continuous process and product improvement.
  • Evaluate off-the-shelf and custom components, subassemblies, and systems.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining testing protocols and documentation.
  • Assist in lab experiments and field operations on the water around Victoria to validate new products, provide quality assurance, and collect water quality data for internal use.

Production Support

  • Work closely with the production team to support instrument assembly and testing processes.
  • Provide input on manufacturing and assembly processes to enhance production efficiency and quality.
  • Troubleshoot and address any issues that may arise during production.
  • Identify capable suppliers and manufacturers to purchase and expedite the delivery of key components.
Qualifications:
  • Current resident and ability to work in Canada.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline or highly relevant experience.
  • 2+ years of experience in a mechanical design role.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong understanding of product design principles, 3D modeling, and prototyping.
  • Proficient with CAD software and in-depth knowledge of SolidWorks.
  • Experience with rapid prototyping techniques such as 3D printing (FDM, SLA) laser cutting, etc.
  • Hands on fabrication experience using various manufacturing processes (drilling, milling, lathe…)
  • Experience with soldering, crimping, cable harnesses, wiring electronics.
  • Working knowledge of tightly integrated electromechanical assembly processes.
  • General knowledge of material properties, manufacturing techniques, adhesives, and fasteners.
  • Strong knowledge of testing methodologies and procedures.
  • Ability to readily learn new packages and solve problems with software and computer systems.
  • Required knowledge in standard word processing, spreadsheet, and database programs.
  • Effective written and oral communication and collaboration skills.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, comfortable working in a small company environment where both autonomy and working as part of a dynamic team are essential.
  • Experience in underwater instrumentation and robotics is considered a strong asset.
  • Passionate about global environmental issues.
