JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Police Patrol Sergeant

Department: Law Enforcement

Reports To: Lieutenant

Job Status: Non-Exempt - Hourly

Type: Regular Full Time

Grade: “K”

JOB SUMMARY:

Under general direction of the Police Lieutenant, the Sergeant shall supervise, assign, review, and participate in the work of the law enforcement staff, on an assigned shift, including traffic and field patrol, operations, investigations, officer recruitment, training and processing of evidence and property. Coordinates activates and training with other law enforcement agencies and performs a verity of technical tasks relative to the assigned area of responsibility.

MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Exercises general supervision over patrol officers and other assigned staff.
  2. Reviews a variety of police related reports prepared by subordinate officers.
  3. Evaluates and directs officer’s arrests based on circumstances and evidence to determine whether a subject will be detained or placed in jail.
  4. Makes day-to-day police assignments as required by the needs of service.
  5. Advises the Lieutenant on deployment needs of personal during emergency responses.
  6. Maintains contact with all police personnel to coordinate investigation activates, provide mutual assistance during emergencies, and provide general information about Department activities.
  7. Maintains contact with the public, court officials, and other Tribal officials in the performance of police activities.
  8. Conducts special or emergency operations involving the direction of patrol officers.
  9. Participates in department training activities, reviews training needs of personnel, and recommends accordingly.
  10. Conducts periodic performance evaluations for assigned personnel.
  11. Personally, participates in investigations of law violations, obtaining evidence and compiling information regarding these crimes.
  12. Maintains the department evidence lockers and associated records, to ensure compliance with recognized law enforcement standards of evidence collection and storage.
  13. Patrol Sergeants work a uniformed shift in the performance of patrol, traffic control, investigation, detection, and arrest of persons involved in crimes or misconduct.
  14. Maintains availability by radio or telephone for consultation on law enforcement actions.
  15. Conducts Interrogations and Interviews related to law enforcement incidents.
  16. Maintains a daily shift log of all law enforcement activates conducted during the work shift.
  17. Assists citizens with such matters as, locked or stalled vehicles, crime prevention, drug resistance, traffic safety, etc.
  18. Required to perform shift work including days, afternoon shifts, evenings and weekends and holidays as needed.
  1. All other necessary law enforcement or emergency service duties as assigned by the Nooksack Tribal Lieutenant and Chief of Police.

PREFERENCE:

  • Indian Preference Policy applies to this and all positions with the Nooksack Indian Tribe.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The following qualifications are required for the incumbent to have, in order to be considered for the position.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Previous employment as a full-time, commissioned law enforcement officer.
  • A minimum of three years in law enforcement as an officer, a minimum of 3 years with any Tribal Police Department and must be a current employee of the Nooksack Tribal Police Department.
  • Completion of a Field Training Officer (FTO) course, or the ability to complete the course upon appointment.
  • Completion of a First Level Supervision course, or the ability to complete the course upon appointment.

REQUIRED SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES POSITION:

  • Ability to train and supervise subordinate personnel.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques and equipment.
  • Knowledge of Tribal, Federal and Washington State laws.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, supervisors and the public.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating situations and in making decisions.
  • Ability to follow and give verbal and written directives.
  • Ability to provide effective leadership to subordinate personnel, speak effectively and communicate to any audience, exercising sound judgment.
  • Familiar with the use of radio equipment and the ability to follow established procedure.

REQUIRED CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Must pass alcohol/drug test at time of hire and throughout employment.
  • Must pass criminal background check at time of hire and periodically thereafter.
  • Must have no felony convictions or misdemeanors involving firearms and/or felonious assault, theft or excess use of alcohol or other drugs.
  • Must have no Domestic Violence history or offenses, precluding firearm possession.
  • Must successfully complete and pass a Phycological Evaluation.
  • Must successfully complete and pass a Polygraph Examination.

REQUIRED LICENSES OR CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Must have and maintain throughout employment a valid Washington State Driver’s License and meet the insurability requirements of the Tribe. (Must Provide Driving Abstract at time of hire).
  • Must possess and provide a certificate of completion from an accredited police training academy.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.):

  • The employee is required to perform shift work including day, afternoon shifts, evenings, nights, including weekends and holidays.
  • Duties performed will take place indoors and outdoors and will encounter the possibility of adverse weather conditions.
  • The ability to tolerate loud noises which may vary from minimal to extreme in the patrol environment.
  • Officers are routinely asked to respond to situations involving multiple subjects under dangerous circumstances, often without the advantage of immediate back up officers to assist.
  • While performing these duties, officers are frequently required to sit for prolonged periods of time.
  • Employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle objects or controls and reach with both hands and arms.
  • Ability to maintain the same physical standards required of subordinates and presents a professional image to the public and other law enforcement agencies.
  • Must be able to see both distance and close up (20/40 with or without correction).
  • Must be able to see in color.
  • Must be able to speak, read, and write in English.
  • Hearing capability must be acute or correctable to industry standards at the time of hiring.
