JOB SUMMARY:
The Tribal Library Clerk supports the daily operations of the Nooksack Tribal Library and helps maintain a welcoming, culturally grounded environment for youth, families and community members. This position assists with circulation, shelving, cataloging, and maintaining library materials, including culturally sensitive items. The Library Clerk also supports literacy and cultural programming, such as book talks, reading activities, scavenger hunts, and storytelling events, that promote Indigenous knowledge, Nooksack values, and a love of learning. Working closely with the Education Department, Youth Program, and cultural leaders, the Library Clerk ensures the library remains an organized, respectful, and inclusive space for the community.
MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist with daily library operations including circulation, check-in/check-out, shelving and maintaining an orderly collection.
- Support cataloging and inventory tasks, ensuring respectful handling of culturally sensitive materials.
- Maintain a welcoming and inclusive library environment for youth, families, and community members.
- Help curate and organize materials that reflect Nooksack and broader Indigenous cultures, languages, and histories.
- Assist patrons with locating materials, using computers, accessing online resources, and basic research needs.
- Support youth literacy activities such as book talks, reading logs, themed reading challenges, and guided reading time.
- Create and run library engagement activities including scavenger hunts, book bingo, seasonal reading games, and simple craft-based literacy projects.
- Help prepare and set up cultural and educational events such as storytelling events, workshops and community gatherings.
- Collaborate with Education and Youth Program staff to support curriculum and youth development initiatives.
- Assist with documenting and preserving tribal knowledge, oral histories and community records under guidance from cultural leaders.
- Support digital literacy by helping patrons with basic computer use, internet safety, and online tools.
- Maintain usage statistics and simple reports as directed by the Youth Education Director.
- Provide clerical support including filing, data entry, and maintaining organized workspaces.
- Assist with volunteer or intern coordination as needed.
- Promote library services through outreach, tours, and community engagement activities.
- Uphold tribal policies and cultural protocols in all library operations.
- Participate in trainings and staff meetings to support professional growth and tribal education goals.
OTHER DUTIES:
Because of the Tribe's commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.

- Indian Preference Policy applies to this and all positions with the Nooksack Indian Tribe.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The following qualifications are required for the incumbent to have, in order to be considered for the position.
REQUIRED EDUCATION EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION:
- An Associate's Degree is required; additional coursework in library science education, or related fields is preferred.
- Experience working in a library, school or office setting.
- Familiarity with tribal communities, cultures, and values.
- Basic proficiency with computers and digital tools (email, catalog systems, internet use).
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to follow cultural protocols when handling materials, interacting with Elders, and supporting cultural programming.
Knowledge of
REQUIRED SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABI LITIES POSITION:
- Indigenous literature and oral traditions.
- Experience working with youth or K-12 students.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic environment.
- Familiarity with library software or cataloging systems.
REQUIRED CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Must pass alcohol/drug test at time of hire and throughout employment.
- Must pass criminal background check at time of hire and periodically thereafter.
REQUIRED LICENSES OR CERTIFICATIONS:
- Must have and maintain throughout employment a valid Washington State Driver's License and meet the insurability requirements of the Tribe. (Must Provide Driving Abstract at time of hire). Only if they have to drive if not remove from JD
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.):
- The standard work week is 8:30-5:00 Monday through Friday (occasionally may have to work evenings)
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for long periods and frequently required to talk and listen.
- Sitting for extended periods while at a desk or in meetings.
- Manual dexterity to operate a keyboard, calculator and telephone system
- Ability to lift up to 20+ pounds without assistance occasionally.
- Typical office setting with environmentally controlled conditions.
- Read, write, speak and understand English
- Ability to listen, understands customers, and has the ability to translate rules, regulations, and policies to clients so they understand the issues/problems.
- Operate in mentally and physically stressful situations with composure.
- May have to walk/drive between office locations under a variety of conditions.
