Job Title: Summer Youth Program Aide

Department: Education/Youth

Reports To: Youth Program Coordinator

Job Status: Seasonal

Type: Non-Exempt (Hourly)

Grade: A

JOB SUMMARY:

The duties of this position will support youth program participants, engage in activities that are associated with the circle of wellness, improve cultural identity, provide anti-substance abuse programs, improve academic achievement and promote youth leadership roles.

MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assists with the enrichment and recreation program offering, including program planning, marketing, and customer service.
  2. Assists with developing and managing activity plans, supplies and logistics.
  3. Provide high quality customer service via phone, email and in-person communication.
  4. Assist with registration and confirmation processes for program registrants.
  5. Assists with the overseeing of the implementation of programs, including staff preparation and follow-through.
  6. Organize materials and represent the department at various special events and community activities.
  7. Assist with supervision of student throughout the duration of the Youth Program.
  8. Assist regular staff with advising, helping and tutoring student.
  9. Participate in youth activities and programs, while displaying a professional, enthusiastic and courteous demeanor at all times.
  10. Teach student to anticipate difficult situations and deal with them.
  11. Create opportunities to provide student with positive attention.
  12. Encourage program interaction.
  13. Work with staff to ensure the success of the student.
  14. Serve as role model for student.
  15. Plan and follow directions of Program Manager.
  16. Perform work in timely fashion.
  17. Maintain positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner that gets along with customers, clients, co-workers and management.
  18. Must have excellent conflict resolution skills and be able to diplomatically handle confrontation.
  19. Participate in daily staff meetings in planning and implementing activities.
  20. Enforce rules to ensure safety at all times.
  21. Perform related work appropriate to classification assigned.

OTHER DUTIES:

Because of the Tribe's commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.

  • Indian Preference Policy applies to this and all positions with the Nooksack Indian Tribe.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The following qualifications are required for the incumbent to have, in order to be considered for the position.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Have experience working with children/youth or in the role of a mentor for youth
  • Must be at least 20 years of age

REQUIRED SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES POSITION:

  • Must be able to present information to youth in a language they understand
  • Must be able to develop and present activities reports as needed.
  • Must have the ability to interact patiently with a diverse student population
  • Must have the ability to communicate clearly and tactfully with students and adults
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality at all times.

REQUIRED CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Must pass alcohol/drug test at time of hire and throughout employment.
  • Must pass criminal background check at time of hire and periodically thereafter.
  • Must have obtained Hepatitis B Immunization or must obtain within 120 days of employment
  • Subject to initial and periodic tuberculosis TB test/screen

REQUIRED LICENSES OR CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Must have or obtain (within 3 months of hire) CPR certification and attend other required departmental certification trainings as required, e.g. Blood borne pathogens. All required certifications must be maintained current and in good standing throughout employment

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.):

  • The standard work week Monday through Friday.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for long periods and frequently required to talk and listen.
  • Sitting for extended periods while at a desk or in meetings.
  • Manual dexterity to operate a keyboard, calculator, and telephone system
  • Ability to lift up to 50+ pounds without assistance occasionally.
  • Read, write, speak and understand English
  • Ability to listen, understands customers, and has the ability to translate rules, regulations, policies to clients so they understand the issues/problems.
  • Operate in mentally and physically stressful situations with composure.
  • Must be able to bend, reach, kneel, twist, and grip from assigned work areas.
  • Work maybe performed indoors and outdoors in varies climates
  • Must be able to actively engage in activities with the youth.
