Internship at the European Seaweed Association – Help shape a sustainable future

Are you looking for a challenging internship where you can contribute to a sustainable and innovative European seaweed sector? Do you want to play your part in the transition to a sustainable future with a new and versatile resource? Then an internship at the European Seaweed Association (ESWA) is for you.

The Hague | 40 hours per week | 6 months | Start January 2026

What will you do?

As an intern at the European Seaweed Association (ESWA) you will have the chance to immerse yourself in the world of seaweed. Your commitment and creativity are important to our team.

You will actively contribute to a variety of projects and activities in the seaweed sector, depending on your interests and background. Examples include:

  • Supporting innovative seaweed farming projects

  • Helping to organise events, knowledge workshops and campaigns

  • Contributing to further development of the roadmap for the sector

You will do this together with stakeholders across the seaweed value chain and of course with the enthusiastic ESWA team.

Who are we?

The European Seaweed Association (ESWA) is the representative body for the European seaweed industry. Seaweed has huge potential to make a positive contribution to global challenges. ESWA 1) represents the sector, 2) supports its member network and 3) promotes the seaweed sector on behalf of more than 130 member organisations from across Europe.

In addition, we manage the largest Offshore Test Site in Europe (twelve kilometres off the coast of Scheveningen) and the first seaweed farm in an offshore wind farm, NSF#1.

Why seaweed?

Both the climate crisis and a growing world population challenge us to find new solutions. Seaweed cultivation offers a major opportunity. Seaweed does not require agricultural land, fresh water or fertilisers to grow, which makes it one of the most sustainable crops to cultivate.

It is a highly versatile and nutritious marine plant that can be used for many sustainable applications: as food for humans, animals and plants, as packaging material and even as biogas.

Asia has been cultivating seaweed on a large scale for some time already, but that production is not local for Europe and not always sustainable. That is why we are working on a sector here that produces high quality, safe and local (European) seaweed in a nature inclusive and innovative way.

Who are we looking for?

  • You are an enthusiastic bachelor or master student at a university or university of applied sciences with a passion for sustainability and innovation

  • You have a relevant study background and profile

  • You have a proactive hands on attitude and are able to work independently

  • You have excellent written and verbal communication skills in both Dutch and English

  • You are social and confident approaching people

  • You are available full time for a period of six months, of which at least two days per week at our office in The Hague

  • Start January 2026

What do we offer?

  • An inspiring and dynamic working environment at a unique organisation where you can contribute to a sustainable future

  • The opportunity to gain valuable learning experience in diverse sustainability projects and to build a network in the seaweed sector

  • A small organisation with a highly motivated and enthusiastic team and a shared mission

  • A full time gross internship allowance of €500 per month
