Duties

As a Maintenance Mechanic, you will perform the following duties:

  • Follow facility operational plans and performs administrative work related to facility maintenance of physical structures, equipment, and utility maintenance and operations.
  • Maintain and repair various systems to include two seawater sourced Trane heat pumps, three walk-in freezers, two walk in coolers, two roof top package units, a Liebert air conditioning unit for our server room and numerous freestanding freezers. Maintain equipment such as HVAC systems, complex seawater and freshwater pumping, filtering, and treatment systems, and back-up power generation.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and schematics. Use approved plans, coordinate work performed by contractors, operators, mechanics and /or others supporting facility operations.
  • Conduct maintenance and repairs on the small boats that are assigned to the facilities. Conduct or coordinate maintenance and complex repairs of electrical, plumbing, HVAC, irrigation, seawater, buildings, equipment, dock, grounds, vehicles, vessels, and trailers. Identify maintenance and repairs needed on equipment including small vessels, forklifts, cranes, and trucks.
  • Mitigate costs by using warranties, evaluating services and products, and researching options for services, parts, and supplies.
  • Schedule maintenance and repair tasks that can't be completed with the resources available at the research station and ensure maintenance performed by outside vendors is completed in a satisfactory manner.

Qualifications

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • This position requires the operation of a Federal motor vehicle. Incumbent must possess a valid driver's license to drive a federal motor vehicle on a regular and recurring basis.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Forklift Operators certification, NOAA small boat operators' qualifications.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain CPR Certification, AED Certification and a First Aid Certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Position may be required to perform travel, which may be for periods up to several weeks at a time.
  • Work may be performed in remote locations.
  • Incumbent will be part of a rotating on call pool of personnel responding to emergencies after hours and on weekends.
  • Will be responsible for snow removal prior to normal hours of operation in the winter months.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • The work is performed inside and outside with exposure to all kinds of weather. The work area maybe dirty, wet, dusty, and greasy, with inadequate lighting, heat, or ventilation. Incumbent is subject to cuts, abrasions, burns, broken bones, electrical shock, infections, bites, exposure to inhalation or harmful chemical fumes, irritation of eyes, skin and respiratory tract, and the hazards of operating power tools and equipment. Discomfort is encountered when wearing protective clothing, gloves, or eye goggles.
  • The incumbent will be required to travel periodically to our facility at the Little Port Walter Research Facility (LPW). They will need to be flexible enough to respond to facility needs at any location at any time. Logistics management and the ability to operate independently at a remote site for the support of the staff and programmatic needs are also a significant component of this position.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-6900 Warehousing And Stock Handling Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

Federal Wage System (FWS) positions require the use of a Screen-Out Element (SOE). Points awarded for this element will range from 0-4, with 4 being the highest. Points will be based on experience and training which are documented by your responses to the questionnaire. All applicants must receive a score of 2.0 or above on the SOE and an average of 2.0 on all the job elements in order to be considered minimally qualified for the position(s) to be filled.
