Background The Ocean Exploration Trust (OET) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization—founded in 2007 by Dr. Robert Ballard—with the aim of exploring the ocean and seeking new discoveries, while pushing the boundaries of technological innovation, education, and outreach. OET owns and operates E/V Nautilus, a 224-foot exploration vessel equipped with acoustic mapping systems, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and other state-of-the-art exploration technologies. Expeditions aboard E/V Nautilus are conducted in partnership with the organization’s primary sponsors, NOAA Ocean Exploration, and the National Geographic Society, as well as in close collaboration with the ocean exploration community. Through telepresence, E/V Nautilus expeditions are streamed live to provide scientists and the public with real-time access to exploratory research and the excitement of discovery. Data and samples from expeditions are made publicly available in order to provide a foundational resource to stimulate further research, exploration, and management activities. OET is seeking a Mapping Operations Manager to oversee the mapping and navigation operations of the program.

Position Summary The Mapping Operations Manager will provide leadership and support for OET’s scientific expeditions by managing mapping and navigation operations of the program. This person will be responsible for managing all mapping and navigation systems, processes, and protocols. The Mapping Operations Manager will select, train and manage mappers and navigators sailing on E/V Nautilus expeditions, and have a goal of expanding the pool of available mappers and navigators within the program. The Mapping Operations Manager will sail as the Mapping Coordinator and/or Expedition Leader on multiple expeditions each year, not to exceed 3 months per year. The Mapping Operations Manager will support the Chief Scientist on the planning, execution and reporting of all expeditions, and will represent OET at national, regional, and international conferences and meetings.

Duties and Responsibilities ● Ensure that the mapping operations carried out by OET expeditions meet the highest scientific standards, and address the priority needs of the ocean exploration, resource management, and scientific communities. ● Manage the overall maintenance of all mapping equipment aboard E/V Nautilus — including the Kongsberg EM302 multibeam echosounder, Knudsen 3260 sub-bottom profiler, Sonordyne ultra-short baseline navigation system, Oceanscience Underway CTD, Lockheed Martin XBT, and a newly acquired EC150 system— to ensure they meet quality standards. This will include regularly monitoring performance of all systems, overseeing maintenance, calibrations, and upgrades, as well as overseeing the inventory of parts and spares. ● Manage the overall maintenance of all relevant software including ArcGIS, Qimera, Fledermaus and other related applications. ● Contribute to annual mapping report to demonstrate performance of mapping equipment and software. ● Plan and coordinate mapping surveys on E/V Nautilus expeditions to maximize efficiency of mapping previously unmapped areas, and support surveys with ROVs, AUVs, ASVs and other exploration technologies. ● Sail on E/V Nautilus expeditions as an Expedition Leader and/or Mapping Coordinator. ● Select and manage personnel that will sail on E/V Nautilus expeditions as mapping coordinators, mappers and navigators. ● Oversee the training of mapping and navigation personnel for all E/V Nautilus expeditions. ● Work closely with the OET education team to select and mentor mapping interns participating in the organization’s Science and Engineering Internship Program, as well as other partner internship programs such as the NOAA Educational Partnership Program, and the University of New Hampshire Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping GEBCO Scholars program. ● Oversee the compilation of publicly-available mapping and environmental data to support cruise planning, execution, and reporting. This will include publicly available seafloor mapping data, as well as relevant meteorological and ocean environmental data. ● Coordinate creation of season-end mapping data products and statistics. ● Contribute to proposals for funding shiptime on the E/V Nautilus. ● Build and maintain relationships with government, academic and industry partners to ensure that OET mapping operations address the priority needs of the ocean exploration, resource management, and scientific community. ● Coordinate with other OET departments and external scientists regarding the requirements for mapping systems and software. ● Collaborate with OET’s education and outreach team to develop educational and public-facing materials about mapping systems, seafloor mapping, and ocean exploration. ● Represent OET as the lead mapping scientist at relevant scientific workshops, meetings, and conferences. ● Contribute to OET’s diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. ● Other duties as assigned.

Shipboard Duties include ● Sail on E/V Nautilus expeditions as Expedition Leader or Mapping Coordinator ● Maintain and operate all mapping equipment, including overseeing an inventory of parts and spares. ● Maintain and upgrade all mapping and navigation software. ● Train and manage mapping and navigation personnel, including contractors and interns. This will include mentoring student interns. ● Maintain and develop SOPs to optimize mapping and navigation operations, including those needed for data acquisition, data processing, development of data products, and database maintenance. ● Work closely with data engineers to ensure that mapping data is integrated into expedition products and submitted to public archives.

Requirements ● M.S. in seafloor mapping and/or related field (GIS, acoustics, geomatics, physical oceanography) ● 5-7 years of seafloor mapping experience, including multibeam and sub-bottom systems, acoustic data processing, GIS database use and management ● Sea-going experience, particularly in the role of expedition lead or mapping lead ● Proficiency with ArcGIS, Fledermaus, Hypack, Qimera or other mapping and navigation software ● Strong written and oral communication skills ● Excellent organization, time management, teaching and mentoring experience ● Strong operational or engineering project management experience ● Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with a wide variety of people — from junior to senior and from diverse backgrounds ● Ability to work in close quarters in an at-sea environment ● Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate with people from different backgrounds ● (preferred) Familiarity with the US ocean exploration program and community ● (preferred) PhD in seafloor mapping and/or related field preferred (GIS, acoustics, geomatics, physical oceanography)

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work This is a regular full-time position (at least 40 hours/wk) and requires occasional work and travel outside of regular hours and/or on weekends.
