What We Need

The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is a leading voice for U.S. protected waters, is seeking a Visitor Experience Coordinator (VEC) who will be an integral part of the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center (GLMHC) at Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary (TBNMS). The person in this position will work with the sanctuary’s Superintendent and team to deliver meaningful and engaging experiences to students, residents, and visitors.

The GLMHC receives nearly 100,000 visitors annually and is the central focus of sanctuary outreach and interpretive programs. The GLMHC is a hub for community activity, including educational programs, public outreach events, festivals, meetings, and more. As the “gateway” to the 4,300 square miles of sanctuary waters in Lake Huron, the GLMHC serves a vital role in furthering the sanctuary’s mission to protect and preserve the Great Lakes and their rich history. The VEC is a key sanctuary position. The VEC will work with the sanctuary’s Visitor Experience team to develop, administer, and implement the sanctuary’s customer service and visitors’ experience philosophy. This position is a frontline position, and the person in this role will also assist in the training, scheduling, and quality control of the GLMHC’s frontline staff and volunteers. The VEC will work with staff to schedule events, tours, and rentals at the GLMHC. The VEC will work with a sanctuary partner to manage all operations of the sanctuary store. The VEC will work in the planning and delivery of programming at the GLMHC.

This person in this position will work with diverse people, including visitors, volunteers, sanctuary staff, community partners, students, educators, vendors, and contractors. The VEC will be a productive team player and work with a core team to develop, facilitate, and implement sanctuary visitor experience programs.

What You’ll Do

Duty 1: Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center Visitor Experience (35%)

  • Deliver high-quality visitor experiences at the GLMHC.
  • Work with the sanctuary team to develop procedures that ensure guests have high-quality visitor experiences, including pre-and post-visit experiences.
  • Work with the sanctuary team to onboard, train, schedule, and coach volunteers, partners, and staff (Visitor Experience Specialists) at the GLMHC.
  • Work with the sanctuary team to promote and market TBNMS and the GLMHC.
  • Work with the sanctuary operations team to maintain facilities and exhibits to ensure the safety of staff and visitors.

Duty 2: Sanctuary Programming and Events (20%)

  • Work with the sanctuary education and outreach team to develop, plan, schedule, implement, and deliver programming at the GLMHC.
  • Assist in planning and participating in community events, such as Thunder Bay Maritime Festival, Thunder Bay International Film Festival, lectures, and group tours, including cruise ships.
  • Assist in planning, scheduling, and staffing public and private events/rentals at the GLMHC.
  • Assist in planning, scheduling, and staffing outreach events in the community and beyond.
  • Work with the sanctuary team to promote and market TBNMS and GLMHC programming.

Duty 3: Sanctuary Store Management (35%)

  • Research, select, and purchase merchandise and retail-related supplies for GLMHC’s store that tie closely to the sanctuary's mission statement.
  • Work with sanctuary partner on business and financial aspects of sanctuary store operation, including processing and maintaining records, reports of purchases and sales.
  • Oversee point of sale operations and data.
  • Create and maintain merchandise displays, including displays for special events, new exhibits, and holidays.
  • Develop processes and procedures for store operations.

Duty 4 Other as assigned (10%):

  • Support sanctuary’s resource protection mission through education, outreach, research, and stewardship.
  • Seek outside funds to support the sanctuary’s mission.

  • Retail/Frontline Management experience.
  • Strong Communication Skills

  • Ability to travel locally on occasion.

Compensation and Benefits: $50K-$58K/annually, based on experience. The Foundation offers a competitive benefits package.
