Primary Responsibilities

Personnel in this position provide specialized expertise in direct support of marine mammal bioacoustic research. The position requires strong organizational skills, and ability and willingness to work at sea. Experience with scientific and statistical analyses and computer software is strongly encouraged.

Essential Functions

  • Conduct data collection and data analysis under general instruction following standard research methodologies.
  • Set-up and maintain accurate and timely records for assigned research sessions conducted with marine mammals.
  • Have a general understanding of animal training and behavior, in order to conduct behavioral research projects.
  • Coordinate with research staff and animal training staff to ensure research sessions are conducted in a timely, effective, and efficient manner.
  • Communicate to Principal Investigator daily on the status of assigned projects. Prepare reports and summaries on data being collected and progress of assigned projects.
  • Set up, break down, and maintain all equipment related to assigned research projects.
  • Conduct literature review related to assigned projects.
  • As needed, support other research staff members to ensure the research team as a whole works proficiently.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Some planning and prioritization must occur to complete tasks effectively.

Minimum Job Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a STEM related field
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Power Point, and Word
  • Comfortable working on/around the water and outdoors
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds
Preferred Job Requirements
  • Prior coding experience in Python/MatLab/R or equivalent
  • Experience collecting and analyzing data as part of a formal research project in a related field
  • Prior experience conducting research with animals, preferentially marine mammals
