Scope of Position
The means by which technical information is communicated has rapidly changed in recent decades. At the same time, the science-based information related to NGRREC’s mission is of increasing importance to citizens, policymakers, and other target audiences. These developments require highly designed content with sophisticated, multi-faceted communications strategies that include the agile adaptation of material for various audiences and messages.

Moreover, from the NGRREC standpoint, there is a need to create synergies in content development and delivery across the “pillars” of research, education, and outreach.

The immediate focus of this position will be to help develop and coordinate the electronic delivery of technical assistance and educational content for the various “Living with Wildlife” grants. The secondary focus—as time and resources allow—will be to help create synergies in content development and delivery across the NGRREC pillars of research, education, and outreach.
This position supports the grant funded project, A Proactive Strategy for Living with Wildlife in Illinois, a collaboration of the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center (NGRREC), Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Division of Wildlife Resources, Division of Natural Heritage, and Division of Fisheries, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The project develops and communicates web-based wildlife related technical assistance for the general public, landowners, and targeted outdoor recreation audiences. The technical assistance includes wildlife identification, addressing nuisance wildlife issues, citizen-based reporting of unusual sightings or potentially diseased animals, wildlife conservation guidance for focal species, etc. The project is also responsive to the needs and interests of hunters and trappers and describes and illustrates Pittman-Robertson Act investments in wildlife conservation.
Key Measurable Expectations
  • Assist with outreach and communication strategies to promote the offerings of technical assistance and education through the project’s websites, social media, public presentations, etc. Create and develop wildlife related technical assistance through artistic activities such as graphic design, illustration, photography, and videography. Create promotional material and develop outreach communications in various forms, including social media, printed materials and public forums, to extend awareness of the technical assistance provided by the project. Manage social media by publishing posts and responding to viewers’ questions and comments. Create effective targeted communication through writing and editing.
  • Coordinate and interface with members of natural resource related organizations to create outreach video presentations through capturing photographs, recording video and conducting interviews.
  • Communicate and coordinate effectively with project personnel (NGRREC staff and independent contractors).
  • Assess the quality of the content by determining if the offered information is representational, accurate, apt, scientifically-based, and engaging.
  • Assess and utilize technological tools and other means by which to improve communication strategies and workflow efficiency.
  • Assist in training and onboarding new team members that work with social media.
  • Work in coordination with other NGRREC personnel in website development and maintenance of grant funded websites.
