Job Title: Catchment Coordinator - Wairarapa

Type of Role: Full time (1FTE) fixed term - July 2025 to June2026. Potential for role extension subject to funding availability. Flexible hours, with expectation of some work outside of normal office hours, e.g. weeknights and weekends

Location: Wairarapa

Salary: Starting $65,000 - $80,000 per annum pro-rata. Negotiable based on experience and skill

THE ROLE

You will be responsible for the delivery of Mountains to Sea Wellington’s freshwater restoration, science, education and engagement programs in the Wairarapa Region. The purpose of this role is to help grow a supported, connected, and collaborative network of catchment groups, community scientists, rangatahi and freshwater kaitiaki across Wairarapa. You’ll be working to stop further degradation of waterways, reversing past damage, making immediate improvements to freshwater ecosystems, and building intergenerational plans to bring them back to a healthy state.

You’ll collaborate with mana whenua, regional council, our project partners, community and schools. You will work with catchment communities to develop monitoring plans, provide technical expertise, and support in scientific monitoring of waterways, restoration planning, and implementation using best practice approaches. You will also build strong relationships with community groups and facilitate collaboration and knowledge sharing among them. You’ll be working with young people to build their connection and understanding their local taiao and support them in meaningful restoration action.

DESIRABLE SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, TALENTS

This dynamic position requires a range of technical, practical, communication, and project management skills. We do not expect the right candidate to have all the skills needed when beginning the role. Most important to us is having an open-minded approach, willingness to learn, and a passion for kaitiakitanga, freshwater restoration, community engagement, and working with young people.

You will need to be people focussed and enjoy facilitating knowledge sharing with the community. We value people who understand how to work in te ao māori, enjoy the challenges of exercising kaitiakitanga, and promoting sustainable land management practices and initiatives.

Other valuable skills:

· A relevant tertiary qualification or work experience is desirable but not essential

· Knowledge in freshwater ecology, mātauranga waimāori

· Understanding of Te Ao Māori or a commitment to developing your cultural capability, confidence and safety

· Experience working with rural communities and community organisations

· Experience working with young people

· Experience prioritising and managing workflows

· Place based knowledge of the Wairarapa

· Technical expertise with data management tools such asArcGIS
