Mote Marine Laboratory is seeking candidates for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Seagrass Ecosystem Research. Seagrass Ecosystems are critically important to Florida’s ecology and economy, serving vital functions for various fisheries, nursery habitats for a variety of keystone species, sediment stabilization, absorbing nutrients, and coastal resilience. This position will assist in the development of cutting-edge propagation and out-planting technologies, establishing the research structure for ensuring the most genetically resilient seagrass strains are utilized in restoration (similar to Mote’s proven success with coral research and restoration), bringing together the best and brightest scientists and practitioners to collaborate on science-based solutions (similar to Mote’s proven success under the Florida Red Tide Mitigation and Technology Development Initiative), serve as the hub for innovative applied restoration research (similar to the Protect Our Reefs Grant Program), and act as a conduit to education/outreach statewide managed areas in need of seagrass restoration.

Mote is celebrating over 68 years as one of the few remaining independent, non-profit international marine research laboratories. The Mote research enterprise has more than 25 diverse research programs, an array of education/outreach programs, and an aquarium featuring working laboratories with more than 100 marine species. Mote currently has almost 300 staff and 1500 volunteers that are located on its main campus in Sarasota and across seven additional campuses/facilities including a state-of-the-art 200 acre marine and freshwater aquaculture research park, a 19,000 square foot International Center for Coral Reef Research & Restoration in the Florida Keys and work is underway for the over 100,000 square foot Science Education Aquarium.

The Mote scientific expertise is considerable and diverse, and is augmented by approximately 150 non-resident scientists from over 100 different U.S. and international institutions who are involved in projects at Mote. In addition, more than 70 non-resident scientists from around the world have been appointed as Adjunct Mote Scientists due to their significant level of sustained collaboration with Mote scientists and regular use of Mote facilities to conduct their research.

Mote envisions significant growth of its Seagrass Ecosystem Research Program as part of the evolution of its current Sarasota campus into an International Marine Science, Technology and Innovation Park, continued expansion of the Mote Aquaculture Research Park, and stand up of satellite campuses/facilities along the Florida coral reef. The position also affords the opportunity for hosting of visiting scientists, interactions with scientists from multiple disciplines at Mote, and oversight of student interns and volunteers. Postdoctoral Fellows are selected based on their ability to not only strengthen and diversify the laboratory’s significant existing research expertise, but also the potential to establish their own innovative research initiatives that address Mote’s Beyond 2020 Vision & Strategic Plan.

Recent (after 2020) PhD graduates are invited to apply. Applicants with a firm expectation of graduation by Spring 2024 will be considered. This full-time position includes an annual salary of $60,000 -$70,000, health insurance with family options, and benefits include an opt-in retirement plan with employer matching, leaves for holidays, illness, and vacation, and other benefits. The Postdoctoral Fellow will also have an established researcher assigned to serve as a Mentor and will receive office/laboratory space at the Mote Aquaculture Research Park in Sarasota, and funds for startup, operations, and travel. The Fellowship will be for a period of three years assuming appropriate annual progress and exemplary Fellows may be invited to join Mote as a Staff Scientist upon completion of their initial three-year appointment.

Venue Rental Manager

The Venue Rental Manager’s primary responsibility is the oversight of all venue rental operations, to ensure each venue rental client receives outstanding service. The Venue Rental Manager is responsible for increasing revenue through the growth and cultivation of the program. The Venue Rental Manager will be responsible for coordinating and executing all events, managing staff, and ensuring that Mote’s venues are running smoothly and efficiently. The position requires forward thinking to elevate the venue rental program with the ultimate goals of increasing Mote awareness, aquarium and event attendance, as well as member and donor growth, engagement and retention.

Responsibilities:

Develop strategies for promoting the various Mote venues and assist in marketing, promotion, and public relations efforts related to the program. Manage venue rental promotional platforms (WeddingPro, Mote webpage for Venue Rentals, etc.)
Maintain existing relationships and create new relationships with vendors and key stakeholders through networking and community involvement related to the local events industry.
Prepare Mote venue rental packages and pricing options, evaluating sales and suggesting changes as needed.
Manage all administrative tasks of the Department, such as preparing reports, creating annual budgets and managing revenue/expenses.
Serve as the main contact to the sole catering partner at Mote SEA and the various catering vendors at the various campuses. Supervise caterers’ communication with Mote venue rental clients.
Manage all maintenance and repairs of the venue grounds, property, equipment, and facilities, ensuring that the venue and facilities are clean and organized.
Manage all bookings for events and liaise with the clients to determine event logistics.
Develop long-lasting relationships with clients to drive repeat business. Create and maintain the client database for additional revenue opportunities.

Guest Services Associate (Full Time and Part Time Positions Available)

The Guest Services Associate serves as a first point of contact for Mote Aquarium guests. This position is responsible for a variety of guest service operations including daily ticketing and memberships, warmly greeting and assisting guests, and operating specialty stations such as Virtual Reality and Fossil Creek. The Guest Services Associate will interact with guests and provide exceptional customer service with the goal of exceeding guest expectations for their visit.

Job Responsibilities:

Life Support Systems Technician

The Life Support System Technician should have an interest in pursuing a career in Life Support Systems operations at a zoo or public aquarium. The Aquarium Life Support Systems Technician is responsible for the safe operation of Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium’s freshwater and seawater operations.

General Duties:

Duties will include, but are not limited to, daily operation and maintenance of ozone generators, compressors and associated peripheral equipment. Other duties include pump repair, high rate sand filter operation and maintenance, as well as daily operation of water distribution systems, water chemistry testing and repair and maintenance of mechanical systems as necessary. The Life Support Systems Technician will perform backwashing and/or water changes of Mote’s larger exhibits.

The Life Support Systems Technician will participate in the design, installation and maintenance of closed and open seawater systems, seawater heater/chiller equipment, ozone systems, filtrations systems, pumps and associated equipment.

The Life Support Systems Technician will cooperate with staff, volunteers and contractors, but must also be able to work independently. Excellent problem-solving skills are required.

The Life Support Systems Technician will help monitor and help maintain desired water quality parameters and ensure proper dosing of chemicals such as sodium bicarbonate, soda ash, chlorine, ozone and lanthanum chloride when necessary.

Participation in continuing education, including travel to out of town locations, may be required.

Working Hours:

Normal hours are 8.00 am to 5.00 pm Thursday to Monday with one unpaid hour for lunch and will include holiday shifts. Occasional longer daily hours may be required to complete specific tasks. The Life Support Systems Technician may be requested to be available after hours and weekends to support emergency situations.

Minimum Requirements:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Marine Science or related field preferred, technical degree or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Work Experience: Minimum of 1 year in a Public Aquarium Life Support division or water treatment facility preferred. Previous internships or volunteerism will be considered. Knowledge of aquatic animal husbandry preferred.

Staff Biologist - Laboratory Operations Specialist

The Staff Biologist - Laboratory Operations Specialist will assist with general program organization and operation tasks and activities and will participate in field and laboratory activities associated with various projects.

Essential Job Functions:

Primary Duties: The Laboratory Operations Specialist will be responsible for multiple tasks within the Program including: maintaining, ordering and inventory of laboratory supplies and chemicals; coordination and organization of field efforts/activities, including personnel, supplies, equipment and record keeping (maintaining custody/log sheets); proofing of cell count, environmental and ancillary data entered in the FWRI HAB database; scheduling maintenance/calibration of laboratory and field equipment and maintaining records; assisting with program quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) protocols and procedures; assisting program manager with project scheduling and budgets; assisting with assembling/organization of reports, presentations, proposals, etc. (accessing literature, formatting, etc.); assisting with organization of program events; assisting with projects and experimental studies as needed, including field work and laboratory processing of field and laboratory samples. Other duties and responsibilities, as described below, may be assigned as needed and as time allows.

Additional Duties: Additional activities and responsibilities may be assigned as needed. These duties may be temporary in nature and may include; microscopic identification and enumeration of Karenia brevis and other phytoplankton; entry of data into databases and spreadsheets; collection and synthesis of information from the primary literature for incorporation in proposals, reports and publications; occasional assistance to other Laboratory Programs; assistance and participation in Laboratory special events; and other duties as required.

Community Engagement Coordinator

Mote’s Education Department develops and delivers high quality education programs to translate and transfer Mote’s world class research using best practices and technology to reach diverse and global audiences. We inspire active involvement in environmental stewardship, foster learning in future generations, and continue to seek out opportunities to improve and expand our programs and ourselves.

The Community Engagement Coordinator will develop, coordinate, instruct, and evaluate educational programs at Mote Marine Laboratory campuses and within the community. They will work closely with staff, volunteers, and interns in the Education Department and throughout the Lab and Aquarium to ensure that our mission and the needs of our audiences are being met.

Expectations

Demonstrate a working knowledge of Mote’s research, local marine habitats, and best practices in informal science education.
Work collaboratively with other Mote staff on program development to facilitate the translation and transference of scientific information to a variety of audiences.

General Duties

The Community Engagement Coordinator will be responsible for bringing Mote’s research to the community with a strong focus on reaching underserved and underrepresented audiences. This position will be responsible for coordinating programs including (but not limited to): community outreach programs for audiences of all ages, community booth events, onsite community partner visits (including classroom and field components), and other youth programs. The specific responsibilities include:

Coordinate program logistics including scheduling, materials procurement and other duties to ensure successful programs.
Curriculum development: develop and lead pedagogically appropriate and engaging education programs based on Mote’s expanding research programs and local marine environments that enhance ocean literacy and incorporate consistent conservation messages.
Lead hands-on educational on-site classroom/lab/field programs; outreach programs; programs based at Mote field stations around Florida.
Maintain open communication with existing partner organizations in the community.
Research and establish new community partnerships that align with Mote’s mission.
Provide high quality group management to groups of participants of varying ages.
Provide direction/mentorship to Education Specialists, interns, and volunteers.
Prepare, organize, and maintain current educational resources with innovative ideas for future uses, working within the determined budgetary guidelines.
Provide outstanding customer service to our guests and community partners.
Assist with Education animal care and exhibit maintenance.
Participate in Aquarium docent shifts as needed.

Working Hours

The Community Engagement Coordinator will work full time with a schedule determined by their supervisor. Schedule will vary and will include evening and weekend hours.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in education, science, or related field or equivalent experience.
2 years’ experience in informal science education program coordination, development, and delivery.
Experience demonstrating the ability to:
Coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.
Oversee seasonal staff, volunteers and/or interns.
Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Follow departmental and organizational policies and procedures.
Work occasional longer hours at outdoor locations in hot/cold/wet weather, high humidity, intense sunlight while responsible for students and/or adults.
Proficiency in Microsoft Suite and/or Google Suite required; experience with spreadsheets and CRM or registration systems a bonus.

Coral Reef Restoration Technician

Located at Mote’s Key Largo Coral Nursery

Primary Function: This position’s primary function is to actively support and participate in Mote’s coral reef restoration and research activities, assist with the husbandry and maintenance of in situ (offshore) and ex situ (land-based) coral nurseries, and assist with coral reef restoration fieldwork including outplanting, monitoring, and research activities.

Primary Duties:

Extensive in-situ (offshore) and ex-situ (land-based) nursery maintenance and coral husbandry.
Outplant nursery-grown corals to various reef restoration sites.
Conduct routine monitoring and photo-documentation of outplanted corals and restoration sites.
Construct and maintain nursery structures, lab, and field equipment.
Assist with field activities associated with Mote-led and Mote supported research projects.
Assist with data collection, data entry, and report writing.
Additional duties will include assisting with various tasks related to the daily operation of a full-service marine laboratory, assist with field and lab support to visiting scientists, and assist with outreach and education activities as needed including interviews, tours, and workshops.

Minimum Qualifications or Requirements

B.S. degree in the marine or biological sciences from an accredited college or university.
Nationally recognized SCUBA certification (Rescue Diver certification required within 3 months of hire; divemaster or higher preferred).
Meet and maintain standards for AAUS Scientific Diver rating, including medical requirements.
Valid Florida driver’s license.
Ability to be an adaptable and collegial member of the team, self-motivated, and complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Prior experience working in tropical marine ecosystems and identification of Caribbean corals.
Ability to lift heavy objects or equipment up to 50lbs.
Working knowledge of basic computer software (Windows, Word, Excel) required.
Ability to adapt to a changing environment, work independently on certain tasks with minimal direct supervision, and good practical problem-solving abilities.

Preferred Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities

Extensive prior scientific diving experience strongly preferred (>1,000 dives)
Prior experience with recirculating and flow-through seawater systems preferred
Prior coral nursery experience preferred
Ability and experience with operating small vessels up to 28’ LOA preferred (USCG Captain’s license strongly preferred)
Prior working experience with navigating coastal waters throughout the Florida Keys preferred.
Experience and working familiarity with common data management and statistical analysis software preferred (e.g., MatLab, SPSS, SAS, R)

Working Hours

This is a full-time position requiring weekend, evening, and holiday availability to support Mote’s Coral Reef Restoration & Research mission.
