Staff Biologist, Coral Health and Disease Program

Primary Function: This position will primarily assist in the data analysis and management of the Coral Health and Disease Program's historical and ongoing research on coral health, resilience, and susceptibility to environmental changes including global and local stressors. The majority of this staff’s time will be located in Sarasota, FL. However, this position will, in part, be responsible for the implementation and management of coral resilience experiments conducted within the Climate and Acidification Ocean Simulator at Mote’s International Center for Coral Reef Research and Restoration in Summerland Key, FL.

Primary Duties:

  • Assist with implementation of coral experiments including experimental set up, tank maintenance, data collection, data analysis, and report writing
  • Oversee ongoing coral resilience related projects at IC2R3 - this will require travel and lodging at IC2R3 for ~2 consecutive months each summer
  • Maintain databases of coral measurements assessing health state and water quality parameters
  • Oversee data management and data analysis of the coral resilience research deliverables and additional related research projects within the scope of funded grants
  • Assist Sarasota Lab Manager with maintenance of the wetlab and drylab spaces in Mote Sarasota
  • Maintain and utilize equipment used to assess water quality and coral health state of funded projects
  • Undertake laboratory assays and process samples for various biological analyses of experimental corals
  • Travel to field sites to conduct underwater data collection, monitoring of coral health conditions, and collect samples for analysis
  • Assist in the production of project reports and peer reviewed manuscripts on coral health and disease related research
  • Mentor undergraduate or graduate level interns and oversee volunteers that participate within coral health and disease research projects
  • Assist Mote’s development and education departments with outreach activities: this includes providing presentations on Mote’s coral research/restoration, providing tours of the lab, and participating in donor-related events

Additional duties will include assisting Mote staff with various duties related to the daily operation of a full service marine laboratory

Minimum Qualifications and Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • B.S. degree in the marine or biological sciences from an accredited college or university.
  • Valid Florida driver's license.
  • Ability to be an adaptable and collegial member of the team, self-motivated and complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.
  • Working knowledge of computer software (Windows, Word, Excel) for entering data and providing input on project reports
  • Demonstrated ability to statistically analyze and visualize data using R
  • Experience with experimental design, independent research, and statistical applications
  • Comfortable working long hours at outdoor raceways

Preferred Experience:

  • M.S. degree in the marine or biological sciences from an accredited college or university
  • One first author publication in a peer reviewed journal
  • Experience working with large datasets preferred
  • Meet and maintain AAUS Scientific Diver standards, including medical requirements.
  • Participate in heavy physical exertion while swimming or diving or hauling gear required during land-based research activities
  • Knowledge of coral husbandry and experience working with aquariums/raceways
  • Familiarity with PAM fluorometry, respiration chambers, carbonate chemistry analysis, and climate change and ocean acidification research is preferred

Volunteer Coordinator, Florida Keys

The Keys Volunteer Coordinator will work with the Citizen Science Manager, Volunteer and Intern Office staff, under the Director of Volunteer and Intern Resources and Associate Vice President for Education to support new and existing Mote volunteers at Mote facilities throughout the Keys. This position will be located at the International Center for Coral Reef Research and Restoration in Summerland Key.

Job duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Providing outstanding support and resources for Mote volunteers and interns
  • Assisting with managing the volunteer and intern database, record-keeping, communication, and other support activities in coordination with the Volunteer and Intern Office in Sarasota
  • Leading field- and land-based coral restoration activities, including dive trips with citizen scientists
  • Fielding phone calls, electronic communications and visits to answer questions about volunteer opportunities
  • Development, planning, execution and evaluation of volunteer training and volunteer performance
  • Liaising with Mote science staff to place, train and evaluate new volunteers
  • Assisting with communication of volunteer opportunities internally and throughout the community to recruit new volunteers

Exhibits Fabricator

The Exhibits Fabricator is responsible for fabricating and maintaining guest-facing exhibit components at Mote Aquarium’s Sarasota and offsite campuses. The Exhibits Fabricator should have experience in one or more of the following areas (woodworking, cabinetry, fiberglassing, moldmaking, sign installation, mechanical or electrical design, exhibit design, or other related fields). All work performed by the Exhibits Fabricator will demonstrate a high level of professionalism and attention to detail. The Exhibits Fabricator models workplace safety at all times, complying with Mote policies and industry best practices. The Exhibits Fabricator often works on multiple projects concurrently and is responsible for documenting and communicating progress towards goals effectively with stakeholders in multiple departments. The Exhibits Fabricator works as part of the exhibits team to create cost estimates, supply lists, and construction specifications for exhibit fabrication and maintenance.

General Duties:

  • Coordinates exhibit maintenance and repair projects.
  • Makes immediate/emergency repairs within their abilities or makes sure area is safe for Mote guests and staff before reporting issue promptly to maintenance team and supervisor.

Guest Services Associate - Part Time

The Guest Services Associate serves as the first point of contact for Mote Aquarium guests. This position is responsible for facilitating ticket and membership sales, greeting and assisting guests with entry, cashiering and assisting guests at our Fossil Creek area, cashiering and assisting guests at our virtual reality experience, and providing other services to give our guests a great experience during their visit. Qualified applicants will have basic computer skills, cashier experience, and enjoy working with the public.

Job Responsibilities

  • Greet every guest in a friendly manner
  • Accurately conduct transactions using cash, credit cards, checks, coupons, and vouchers
  • Work with the point of sale system to sell and renew memberships and update membership information
  • Connect with our guests to provide the best possible experience by suggesting exhibits, providing safety information and helping to resolve any issues that may occur.
  • Assist guests at our virtual reality experience by informing them how to sit, put on their headset, and setting up the experience
  • Assist guests at our Fossil Creek area by informing them how to sift through the sand and identify the fossils, as well as sell pond fish food
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work space
  • Perform assigned opening and closing duties
  • Preparing and stocking Fossil Creek materials and merchandise

Working Hours:

Normal working hours are 9 am to 5 pm. Must be available to work weekends and holidays.

Maintenance Assistant

The Maintenance Assistant is an hourly position, responsible for the safe maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment and facilities. The Maintenance Assistant is expected to perform high quality work in support of Mote Marine Laboratory’s mission.

General Duties:

The Maintenance Assistant will be responsible for the maintenance and repair of building and facility equipment as directed. Regular filter changes and air conditioning system maintenance as scheduled. Repair and replacement of lighting systems, bulbs and ballasts as needed. Minor plumbing repairs and replacement of parts and systems. Piping system installation and repair as needed and general light carpentry to support Facilities projects.

Responsible for the maintenance and care of the Laboratory grounds and exterior facilities as directed. Duties shall include mowing, pruning, cleanup and sweeping of paved areas. Follow a preventive maintenance program for all equipment to minimize unscheduled downtime. Schedule grounds and maintenance work in cooperation with the Research Division and Departments to support research programs.

Working Hours:

Normal hours are 8.00 am to 5.00 pm Monday through Friday, with lunch approximately 12.00 pm to 1.00 pm. Occasional longer daily hours may be required to complete specific tasks. Work location may vary depending on project, however most days will be located at Mote’s main campus.

Custodial Staff

Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium has part-time and full-time openings for Custodial Staff on weekday, weekend and evening shifts. Custodial Staff are responsible for maintaining an exceptionally clean public aquarium, laboratory and offices for all visitors and staff. The ideal candidate will be experienced in a custodian role focused on building upkeep and will be able to work responsibility without the need of constant supervision. Being well organized, having good communication and time-management skills and following directions are imperative to this position.

Duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Sweep, remove debris and clean spills throughout the facility
  • Regularly check trash and recycling cans and emptying as needed
  • Clean and maintain stocked and restrooms and hand sanitizer stations including mirrors, walls, toilets, urinals, floors and restock with supplies (toilet paper, paper towels, soap, etc.)
  • Clean windows and acrylic tanks and displays throughout
  • Respond promptly to calls for custodial/maintenance needs

Night Watchman

The Night Watchman at Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium’s primary duties are to monitor and ensure the continued operation and upkeep of Aquarium Life Support mechanical systems and equipment related to sea-water distribution, including (but not limited to) pumps, motors, tanks, valves, ozone etc. They will be expected to make multiple rounds of the campus facilities to determine systems operation and security of buildings and equipment each shift. They will additionally provide after-hours access to campus and facilities as necessary for staff or during events, and work with night custodial staff as assigned.

Working Hours:

Overnight shifts, 4pm - 12am or 12am - 8am, including some weekends and holidays.

Specific Duties:

  • Identify irregular or unusual conditions that may cause security concerns or safety hazards

Staff Chemist – Chemical and Physical Ecology

The Chemical and Physical Ecology Program at Mote Marine Laboratory seeks a technician or a staff chemist (dependent on experience) to be filled as soon as possible. This position will be permanently located at the main lab in Sarasota, Florida. General duties to be performed include inorganic chemical and physical analyses (water/sediment quality parameters), participation in field sampling which may include travel, operations from trucks or boats, occasional evening/night/weekend shifts, and driving laboratory vehicles both with and without boat trailers. All activities are carried out according the Mote Marine Lab Quality Assurance Plan including operation and maintenance of scientific equipment, preparations for field trips, sample analyses, and data quality assessments. Proficiency is expected for work on computers, and, after initial training, on water quality instrumentation, navigation and safety equipment, balances, pH meters, spectrophotometers, and the like. In general, Staff Chemists will develop skills in particular laboratory analyses and activities and accept assignment to specific projects. Familiarity with National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Conference (NELAC) standards is a benefit, though not required. Familiarity with chemical analyzers (e.g. AutoAnalyzers, CHN instruments, spectrophotometers) also a benefit. This position is currently about 80% lab work and 20% experimental or fieldwork including work on boats (with the possibility of some overnight (1 night to 1 month) research vessel time. Emergency CPR, First Aid, and Coast Guard small vessel safety courses are available through the laboratory and a Staff Chemist will be expected to obtain these certifications within a finite period. This position is expected to be detail oriented, organized, and able to work both independently and part of a team.

Requirements:

A bachelor’s degree with a major or minor in chemistry from an accredited university. In lieu of a chemistry degree, course work in other natural science areas or employment in a related field will be considered. Must have some basic chemistry lab experience and knowledge. The Exhibits Technician is responsible for maintaining, developing, and installing all guest-facing AV equipment at Mote Aquarium’s Sarasota and offsite campuses. This can include video monitors, interactive touchscreens, projectors, cameras, push buttons, speakers, augmented reality exhibits, etc. Applicants interested in designing interactive exhibits and applying new technologies to create an outstanding guest experience are encouraged to apply. Primary Functions: The purpose of this position is to support the execution of production, research, and restoration operations focused on invertebrate grazers for coral reef restoration in close coordination with the Coral Reef Restoration Research Program Manager. The incumbent will be responsible for leading and coordinating laboratory and field research operations to meet and exceed funded project and programmatic deliverables. The incumbent will be responsible for leading and supervising a team of staff, interns, and volunteers to organize, execute, and present the program’s research on whole ecosystem restoration, specifically the integration of invertebrate grazers into coral reef restoration efforts. Frequent travel to research sites in the Florida Keys and periodic travel to sites throughout the Wider Caribbean Region may be necessary to support research and restoration objectives. Duties will include assisting with the preparation of reports, collection, entry, management, and analysis of quantitative and observational data. Incumbent will be responsible for participating in the preparation of manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Primary Duties:

  • Periodic collection and transport of grazers and algae to/from Mote’s grazers hatchery facility at Mote Aquaculture Research Park (MAP) in Sarasota, FL
  • Supervise and manage laboratory and field-based operations including experimental and observational studies
  • Supervise and manage a diverse and dynamic team of staff, interns, and volunteers to execute demanding funded project deliverables and programmatic research and restoration objectives
  • Lead the collection, entry, management, and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data
  • Lead and assist with literature reviews, grant proposal development, and the preparation of reports and manuscripts
  • Some travel to production, research, and field sites in Florida and the Wider Caribbean Region may be required
  • Prepare weekly updates on field and laboratory operations for team meetings; maintain close communication with program manager and team staff in other locations

Additional duties will include assisting with various tasks related to the daily operation of a full-service aquaculture station and assisting with outreach and education activities as needed.

Minimum Qualifications or Requirements:

  • Master of Science degree in marine science, aquaculture, biological sciences, ecological sciences, or related field from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum SCUBA certification of Rescue Diver (Dive Master or higher preferred)
  • Ability to meet and maintain AAUS Scientific Diver standards, including medical requirements
  • Valid license to drive in the State of Florida (CDL preferred)
  • Lift heavy objects up to 70 lbs required
  • Participate in heavy physical exertion while swimming or diving or hauling gear required
  • Proficiency with common data management and word processing software (Microsoft Excel/Word) required
  • Previous field and laboratory research experience required

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Previous research diving experience and current/active AAUS Scientific Diver rating strongly preferred
  • USCG Captain’s license (or ability to earn within 6 months of hire) strongly preferred
  • Previous experience with operating and trailering small research vessels (up to 35’ LOA) within the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary strongly preferred

This full-time, entry-level position is responsible for writing, editing, fact checking and strategic use of content to support community relations and communications activities for all Mote divisions and programs. Focusing on Mote’s website, Aquarium exhibit content and outreach publications, this position enhances Mote’s reputation, integrity and partnerships, supporting the institutional goals of: 1) promoting Mote as a world-class marine research institution, 2) generating attendance for Mote Aquarium, Education programs and events, and 3) supporting fundraising efforts.

Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Write content about all aspects of Mote’s mission for a variety of external and internal communications platforms, including Mote’s public website (mote.org), exhibits in Mote Aquarium, the biannual Mote Magazine, Mote’s annual report, paid content marketing pieces, handouts, fundraising appeals, an internal digital asset management system and more.
  • Translate complex scientific material into a format digestible by non-expert audiences of all ages.
  • Edit and fact check content generated by others. Review for grammar, apply Mote style and branding guidelines, and above all, ensure accuracy and the use of expert sources.

Mote Science Education Aquarium (SEA) Education Coordinator

Mote’s Education Department develops and delivers high quality education programs using best practices and technology to reach diverse and global audiences.
