Postdoctoral Fellow, Seagrass Ecosystem Research
Mote Marine Laboratory is seeking candidates for a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Seagrass Ecosystem Research. Seagrass Ecosystems are critically important to Florida’s ecology and economy, serving vital functions for various fisheries, nursery habitats for a variety of keystone species, sediment stabilization, absorbing nutrients, and coastal resilience. This position will assist in the development of cutting-edge propagation and out-planting technologies, establishing the research structure for ensuring the most genetically resilient seagrass strains are utilized in restoration (similar to Mote’s proven success with coral research and restoration), bringing together the best and brightest scientists and practitioners to collaborate on science-based solutions (similar to Mote’s proven success under the Florida Red Tide Mitigation and Technology Development Initiative), serve as the hub for innovative applied restoration research (similar to the Protect Our Reefs Grant Program), and act as a conduit to education/outreach statewide managed areas in need of seagrass restoration.
Mote is celebrating over 68 years as one of the few remaining independent, non-profit international marine research laboratories. The Mote research enterprise has more than 25 diverse research programs, an array of education/outreach programs, and an aquarium featuring working laboratories with more than 100 marine species. Mote currently has almost 300 staff and 1500 volunteers that are located on its main campus in Sarasota and across seven additional campuses/facilities including a state-of-the-art 200 acre marine and freshwater aquaculture research park, a 19,000 square foot International Center for Coral Reef Research & Restoration in the Florida Keys and work is underway for the over 100,000 square foot Science Education Aquarium.
The Mote scientific expertise is considerable and diverse, and is augmented by approximately 150 non-resident scientists from over 100 different U.S. and international institutions who are involved in projects at Mote. In addition, more than 70 non-resident scientists from around the world have been appointed as Adjunct Mote Scientists due to their significant level of sustained collaboration with Mote scientists and regular use of Mote facilities to conduct their research.
Mote envisions significant growth of its Seagrass Ecosystem Research Program as part of the evolution of its current Sarasota campus into an International Marine Science, Technology and Innovation Park, continued expansion of the Mote Aquaculture Research Park, and stand up of satellite campuses/facilities along the Florida coral reef. The position also affords the opportunity for hosting of visiting scientists, interactions with scientists from multiple disciplines at Mote, and oversight of student interns and volunteers. Postdoctoral Fellows are selected based on their ability to not only strengthen and diversify the laboratory’s significant existing research expertise, but also the potential to establish their own innovative research initiatives that address Mote’s Beyond 2020 Vision & Strategic Plan.
Recent (after 2020) PhD graduates are invited to apply. Applicants with a firm expectation of graduation by Spring 2024 will be considered. This full-time position includes an annual salary of $60,000 -$70,000, health insurance with family options, and benefits include an opt-in retirement plan with employer matching, leaves for holidays, illness, and vacation, and other benefits. The Postdoctoral Fellow will also have an established researcher assigned to serve as a Mentor and will receive office/laboratory space at the Mote Aquaculture Research Park in Sarasota, and funds for startup, operations, and travel. The Fellowship will be for a period of three years assuming appropriate annual progress and exemplary Fellows may be invited to join Mote as a Staff Scientist upon completion of their initial three-year appointment.

Education Programs Coordinator
Location - Key Largo, FL
Mote’s Education Department develops and delivers high quality education programs using best practices and technology to reach diverse and global audiences. We inspire active involvement in environmental stewardship, foster learning in future generations, and continue to seek out opportunities to improve and expand our programs and ourselves.
The Education Coordinator will develop, coordinate, instruct, and evaluate educational programs at Mote Marine Laboratory campuses and within the community. They will work closely with staff, volunteers, and interns in the Education Department and throughout the Lab and Aquarium to ensure that our mission and the needs of our audiences are being met.
This position will lead education programs in the upper Florida Keys from Marathon to Miami.
General Duties
The Education Programs Coordinator will support all education program areas including school programs, public programs, community engagement programs, outreach programs and camps.
- Coordinate program logistic arrangements, scheduling, materials procurement, curriculum development, and any other duties to ensure successful programs.
- Develop and lead current & relevant education programs based on Mote’s expanding research programs and local marine environments that enhance ocean literacy and incorporate consistent conservation messages.
- Lead hands-on educational on-site classroom/lab/field programs; outreach programs; programs based at Mote field stations around Florida.
- Provide high quality group management to groups of participants of varying ages.
- Provide direction/mentorship to Education Specialists, interns, and volunteers.
- Prepare, organize, and maintain current educational resources with innovative ideas for future uses, working within the determined budgetary guidelines.
- Provide outstanding customer service to our guests.
Working Hours
The Education Coordinator will work full time with a schedule determined by their supervisor. Schedule will vary and may include evening, weekend, and holiday hours.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in education, science, or related field or equivalent experience.
- 2 years’ experience in informal science education program coordination, development, and delivery.
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of Mote’s research, local marine habitats, and best practices in informal science education.
- Experience demonstrating the ability to:
- Coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.
- Oversee seasonal staff, volunteers and/or interns.
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Follow departmental and organizational policies and procedures.
- Work occasional longer hours at outdoor locations in hot/cold/wet weather, high humidity, intense sunlight while responsible for students and/or teachers.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite required
- Certifications required: CPR/First Aid, Lifeguard & EpiPen (may be acquired within 3 months of hire date); Rescue SCUBA (or ability to obtain within 3 months of hiring)
- Ability to carry/move heavy objects up to 40 lbs occasionally and lead rigorous outdoor activities such as nature walks and kayaking programs.
- Florida driver’s license (or eligibility to obtain one upon arrival) with clean driving record and at least 5 years of driving experience.
- Reliable transportation and the ability to arrive at (off-site) locations on time.
- U.S. citizenship or foreign citizen’s U.S. work permit appropriate for the work.

Venue Rental Manager
The Venue Rental Manager’s primary responsibility is the oversight of all venue rental operations, to ensure each venue rental client receives outstanding service. The Venue Rental Manager is responsible for increasing revenue through the growth and cultivation of the program. The Venue Rental Manager will be responsible for coordinating and executing all events, managing staff, and ensuring that Mote’s venues are running smoothly and efficiently. The position requires forward thinking to elevate the venue rental program with the ultimate goals of increasing Mote awareness, aquarium and event attendance, as well as member and donor growth, engagement and retention.
Responsibilities:
- Develop strategies for promoting the various Mote venues and assist in marketing, promotion, and public relations efforts related to the program. Manage venue rental promotional platforms (WeddingPro, Mote webpage for Venue Rentals, etc.)
- Maintain existing relationships and create new relationships with vendors and key stakeholders through networking and community involvement related to the local events industry.
- Prepare Mote venue rental packages and pricing options, evaluating sales and suggesting changes as needed.
- Manage all administrative tasks of the Department, such as preparing reports, creating annual budgets and managing revenue/expenses.
- Serve as the main contact to the sole catering partner at Mote SEA and the various catering vendors at the various campuses. Supervise caterers’ communication with Mote venue rental clients.
- Manage all maintenance and repairs of the venue grounds, property, equipment, and facilities, ensuring that the venue and facilities are clean and organized.
- Manage all bookings for events and liaise with the clients to determine event logistics.
- Develop long-lasting relationships with clients to drive repeat business. Create and maintain the client database for additional revenue opportunities.
- Supervise the Venue Rental team members within the Department and ensure all responsibilities are tasks are executed in a professional and efficient manner
- Oversee creation of contracts and invoices for venue rentals.
- Oversee billing and tracking of all payments/service fees by clients.
- Oversee pre-event coordination of all aspects of venue rentals.

- Oversee communication with Mote’s A/V Department to schedule and coordinate the rental of sound equipment, furniture, and other venue equipment.

Minimum Requirements: First Aid and CPR certified or willing to attain within 3 months of hire date
Education: Bachelor’s degree in business, hospitality, or a related field
Experience: 3+ years’ proven experience in operations management of a multi-purpose event venue. Computer literate, able to work accurately and efficiently with clients and vendors. Detail oriented with event planning experience. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, particularly in relationships with clients, volunteers, donors, staff and aquarium visitors. Ability to manage multiple projects independently. Must be able to create layouts, place rental orders, and manage events from start to finish. Ability to self-start is required.

Guest Services Associate (Full Time and Part Time Positions Available)
The Guest Services Associate serves as a first point of contact for Mote Aquarium guests. This position is responsible for a variety of guest service operations including daily ticketing and memberships, warmly greeting and assisting guests, and operating specialty stations such as Virtual Reality and Fossil Creek. The Guest Services Associate will interact with guests and provide exceptional customer service with the goal of exceeding guest expectations for their visit.
Job Responsibilities:
- Greet every guest in a friendly and welcoming manner
- Provide a great aquarium experience by assisting guests with any questions or concerns and providing direction as it relates to any aquarium programs
- Work with the point of sale system to accurately conduct transactions using cash, credit cards, checks, coupons, and vouchers
- Sell Aquarium memberships and educate guests on opportunities for ticket transfers, renewals, and upgrades, in alignment with membership goals
- Provide excellent customer service through knowledge of all Aquarium experiences, offerings and basic operations
- Operate the Virtual Reality station by conducting transactions to sell rides, teaching guests how to safely operate equipment, and troubleshooting any program issues
- Operate the Fossil Creek area by giving guests directions on sifting for the fossils, identifying fossils, selling fish food for the freshwater ponds, stocking materials and preparing sand drying areas
- Control guest entry by adhering to ticket times, directing guests to the appropriate line, and answering all questions relating to their ticket options
- Provide event staffing for all Aquarium special events, including some late nights and weekends
- Maintain a clean and orderly work space
- Perform assigned opening and closing duties of all buildings
- Put safety of guests, employees, interns and volunteers as a top priority
- Assist customers that may have experienced injury, sickness, lost child, etc. according to the associated Mote protocols

Working Hours:
Normal working hours are 8:30 am to 5 pm, with a half hour unpaid break for lunch. Must be available to work weekends and holidays.
Qualifications:
The ideal team member will be energetic, outgoing, and patient with a desire to provide a positive and memorable experience for each Aquarium visitor. The ideal candidate is a team player able to perform additional functions as assigned. Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential for this role.

Development Associate
Mote Marine Laboratory, located in Sarasota, Florida, was founded in 1955 as an independent marine research institution and has since become a distinguished and integrated research enterprise with a focus on education, public outreach, and public policy programs.
Position Overview
The Development Associate will support corporate partnership creation and fulfillment and event and aquarium sponsorship. The Development Associate at Mote Marine Laboratory will report directly to the Chief Development Officer (CDO) and work collaboratively and independently as part of Mote’s overall Development Team.
The Development Associate will:
• Provide principal development role for special events and programs, including securing event sponsorship, development and management of guest list, and other tasks as needed.
• Create effective engagement strategies for current corporate partners and grow total corporate giving. Analyze current partner benefits to optimize giving, using data analysis.
• Research new corporate prospects and work to develop strategies, access points, and modes of engagement.
• Create grant proposals, presentations, applications, status reports and other materials as needed in support of sponsor and partnership solicitation.
• Create a fulfillment plan for each new corporate partnership secured, which includes a clear roadmap for fulfillment of benefits by individuals. Ensure all benefits are fulfilled and engagement metrics are tracked and reported back to partners.
• Steward donors and partners throughout the year to create meaningful relationships among key stakeholders. Contribute to stewardship plan creation and implementation.
• Provide support for Mote’s overall development efforts, which may include but is not limited to, supporting Mote’s communications and fundraising events efforts.
• Become extremely knowledgeable regarding Mote Marine Laboratory, continually finding ways to increase personal knowledge.
