Founded in 1987 by the late David Packard, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) is a nonprofit oceanographic research center advancing marine science and engineering to understand our changing ocean. Located in Moss Landing, California, the heart of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, MBARI offers ready access to the open ocean and deep sea. Ongoing research programs range across autonomous and remotely operated underwater vehicle systems, control technologies, ocean physics, chemistry, geology, biology, ocean instrumentation, and information management. MBARI hosts approximately 200 employees, with shore facilities that include state-of-the-art science and engineering laboratories, manufacturing and electrical fabrication shops, and dock facilities for MBARI vessels.

MBARI is seeking a Marine Operations Technician (MOT) to ensure that complex marine and subsea systems operate smoothly, safely, and reliably in support of cutting-edge ocean science. This role supports ROV-deployed tool sleds, moorings, elevators, and vessel mission equipment. The MOT identifies and troubleshoots mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, faults; develops technical solutions; and implements repairs and system improvements. The position blends hands-on mechanical and fabrication expertise with structured repair task management and small project leadership. Occasional sea-going assignments are required, with growth opportunities toward qualification as an ROV Pilot or Pilot/Technician.

Primary responsibilities:

Maintenance & System Reliability

  • Perform maintenance and functional verification of sea-going science equipment prior to deployment
  • Conduct inspections to identify faults in mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems and initiate corrective actions
  • Execute preventive and corrective maintenance on mission systems, deck equipment, and subsea support hardware
  • Complete annual overhauls of mooring packages in support of mooring turnaround maintenance periods
  • Ensure equipment readiness through systematic documentation and closeout of maintenance tasks

Integration & Cruise Support

  • Daily review of ROV dive reports to plan and prepare for the next day’s activities and support of emergent work.
  • Assist in integration, staging, and testing of marine operations equipment for scientific cruises
  • Provide at-sea technical support for marine operations projects, including troubleshooting during active operations
  • Sail as a relief ROV pilot or ROV crew member depending on experience and credentials
  • Participate in deck operations and equipment deployments

Mechanical, Fabrication & Technical Development

  • Plan, design, and fabricate underwater devices and support vessel/science systems
  • Perform machining, welding (MIG/TIG), and structural modifications
  • Interpret and develop engineering drawings and schematics using AutoCAD and SolidWorks
  • Maintain organized shop workspace and provide guidance to others using shop tools and equipment

Repair Task & Small Project Management

  • Develop repair scopes and execute task plans using structured work management practices
  • Estimate labor and material requirements for repair activities
  • Track progress, manage timelines, and ensure technical documentation is complete
  • Lead small technical projects such as equipment retrofits, system upgrades, or fabrication builds
  • Coordinate with marine crew, engineers, and scientists to prioritize mission-critical work

Equipment Handling & Logistics

  • Perform movement, staging, and storage of equipment across multiple facilities
  • Assist with some vessel operations and line handling activities
  • Operate forklifts, davits, motor vehicles, and up to a 35-ton mobile crane
  • Maintain accountability for tools, shop equipment, and mission assets

Required qualifications

  • High school diploma and 1-2 years of demonstrated success in relevant field or vocational training in mechanical or fabrication technology
  • Previous experience with mechanical assembly and fabrication techniques
  • Ability to provide excellent service and support in a multi-tasking work environment
  • Excellent work ethic and ability to work independently or within groups
  • Excellent interpersonal, critical thinking, and communication skills
  • Ability to interpret basic mechanical drawings and/or sketches
  • Operational knowledge of hydraulics and mechanical systems
  • Hands-on fabrication experience including machining and welding
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a TWIC card. Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Willingness and ability to work outdoors and at sea for periods up to 14 days
  • Ability to obtain required maritime medical and safety clearances
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

Desired qualifications:

  • Experience with CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks) and common productivity applications
  • Proven sea-going experience in offshore or research vessel operations
  • Experience supporting ROV systems or subsea operations
  • Familiarity with diesel-electric propulsion or marine auxiliary systems
  • Experience using OrCAD or similar electronic design tools
  • Demonstrated experience managing repair tasks or small technical projects

Working conditions

  • Combination of shop-based fabrication work, dockside integration, and offshore vessel support
  • Fieldwork and outdoor environments are routine
  • Occasional sea-going assignments for up to 14 days
  • Dedicated shop workspace with access to fabrication facilities

Professional development & growth
This role provides structured development within Marine Operations, including:

  • Cross-training across vessel systems and subsea technologies
  • Advanced troubleshooting experience in integrated marine science systems
  • Opportunity to train and qualify as a ROV Pilot/Technician
  • Participation in sea trials, system commissioning, and offshore expeditions
  • Career progression within marine technical and subsea operations programs

This position offers the opportunity to directly support advanced oceanographic research at a cutting-edge institution.
