Founded in 1987 by the late David Packard, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) is a nonprofit oceanographic research center advancing marine science and engineering to understand our changing ocean. Located in Moss Landing, California, the heart of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, MBARI offers ready access to the open ocean and deep sea. Ongoing research programs range across autonomous and remotely operated underwater vehicle systems, control technologies, ocean physics, chemistry, geology, biology, ocean instrumentation, and information management. MBARI hosts approximately 200 employees, with shore facilities that include state-of-the-art science and engineering laboratories, manufacturing and electrical fabrication shops, and dock facilities for MBARI vessels.

MBARI is looking for a highly motivated and experienced Mechanical Technician to join our manufacturing team. Reporting to the mechanical technician supervisor, this manufacturing team member will aid all MBARI departments by providing support with fabrication, repair, assembly, and setup of MBARI’s assets. The person in this role can operate under minimal supervision and routinely takes initiative in seeking new methods for effectively completing tasks. Primary responsibilities:
• Assembly, repair, and/or modification of equipment and instrumentation.
• Fabrication of parts using a variety of tools and equipment.
• Mobilization and demobilization of engineering/science equipment to support deployments and recoveries.
• Disassembly and cleaning of recovered platforms and instrumentation.
• Forklift operation, rigging, and working around cranes.
• Routine maintenance of equipment and shop spaces.

Required qualifications:
• High school diploma and 1-2 years of demonstrated success in a relevant field or vocational training in mechanical or fabrication technology.
• Previous experience with mechanical assembly and fabrication techniques.
• Ability to provide excellent service and support in a multi-tasking work environment.
• Excellent work ethic and ability to work independently or within groups.
• Excellent interpersonal, critical thinking, and communication skills
• Ability to interpret basic mechanical drawings and/or sketches.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs.

Desired qualifications:
• Experience with adhesives and potting compounds.
• 3D printer operation experience (SLA and/or FDM).
• Experience with wide variety of shop/manufacturing equipment.
• Previous manufacturing and/or production assembly work experience.
• Forklift certification/experience.
• Shipboard experience and ability to occasionally work at sea.
• Familiarity with a variety of materials (plastics, metals, composites).
