Founded in 1987 by the late David Packard, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) is a nonprofit oceanographic research center advancing marine science and engineering to understand our changing ocean. Located in Moss Landing, California, the heart of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, MBARI offers ready access to the open ocean and deep sea. Ongoing research programs range across autonomous and remotely operated underwater vehicle systems, control technologies, ocean physics, chemistry, geology, biology, ocean instrumentation, and information management. MBARI hosts approximately 200 employees, with shore facilities that include state-of-the-art science and engineering laboratories, manufacturing and electrical fabrication shops, and dock facilities for MBARI vessels.

MBARI is looking for an entry level Mechanical Technician that will bring energy, enthusiasm, and a desire to learn to our mechanical technician group. This group as a whole performs a broad range of tasks while interacting with a large number of individuals and groups here at MBARI. The individual in this position will perform a wide variety of tasks in support of scientists, engineers, ship personnel, and others. These tasks may include:
• Fabrication of parts using various tools and techniques
• Assembly, repair, and/or modification of equipment
• Mobilization and demobilization of gear to support deployments and recoveries
• At-sea work on board vessels
• Disassembly and cleaning of recovered platforms and instrumentation
• Rigging and work around cranes
• Maintenance of equipment and shop spaces

Required qualifications:
• Previous experience with mechanical assembly and fabrication techniques
• Proficiency with hand tools and basic shop tools
• Excellent interpersonal, critical thinking, and communication skills
• Ability to work independently and within groups
• Ability to deliver work on tight schedules
• Ability to occasionally work at sea for specified periods of time
• Ability to interpret basic mechanical drawings and/or sketches
• Positive attitude and a desire to learn
• Ability to lift 50lbs.

Desired qualifications:
• Experience with manual mills and lathes
• TIG and MIG welding experience
• Sheet metal work experience
• Forklift certification/experience
• Experience with adhesives and potting compounds
• 3D printer operation experience (SLA and/or FDM)
• Shipboard/small boat operation experience
• Previous experience with mechanical design
• Familiarity with a variety of materials (plastics, metals, composites)
